Maybe I should have been more specific, let us leave out clothing. I was specifically referring to jewellery or the like.

The diamond studs definitely was on the list (and they belonged to the Old Took)

His buttons were not on the list but could be added. They were made of brass if I remember correctly.

Not abstract, just time consuming! And time is the most precious of all commodities!

To add to the list:

Dwalin showed up at the doorstep with a "blue beard tucked into a golden belt."

There is Thorin's "fine chain that hung about his neck and under his jacket" that he used to hang the key on. (Later on we are told it is Gold.)

A brass ring is mentioned.

The belt of the chief guard on which the keys hung.

And the dwarves discussed "the necklace of Girion, Lord of Dale, made of five hundred emeralds green as grass" which was later given to the Elven King.

Thorin placed his axe in "a belt crusted with scarlet stones."

And Bilbo's mithril coat was held together with "a belt of pearls and crystals."

The "necklace of silver and pearls that Dain had given him at their parting" that Bilbo presented to the Elven King.

Balin's "jeweled belt was of great magnificence."

The lord of the eagles became in after days the King of All Birds and wore a golden crown."

In Mirkwood they saw, "A woodland king was there with a crown of leaves" and later the elven king had a "a crown of berries and red leaves."

Of course, we mustn't forget the One Ring itself.

And Bilbo wore Gold Buttons at the end of the book.

Marcho: I never meant you, you always take a shot at the questions. Just felt as if some response was easily forthcoming even if one didn't have an exhaustive list like yours.

----------
1. Crown : made of silver (in verse), gold (eagles) and leaves and berries (Elven king)

2. Necklace : made of Emeralds, gold and silver, pearls. (can include Thorin's chain around his neck under this one)

3. Studs : diamond

4. Ring : Gold and brass

5. Belt : Thorin's was gold, then we have Balin's jewelled belt, pearls and crystals.

The one I had missed is:

6. Buttons : Brass and gold (I hadn't noticed the gold one at all)

Perhaps we could include the mithril coat too but I do not know if it was worn in times of peace.
------------
Marcho we wait for your question yet again.

The reference I indicated for silver crowns is actually for necklaces, so I do not think I have a mention of silver crowns. Sorry for the mistake.

I'm sort of a culprit I guess, for sitting this one out. I just felt like taking a rest and watching the answers to this. []

I don't have my book, so I'll take a wild guess... Was it the weasel-- I mean, master of Laketown?

Bungo: I'd have loved to hear an elephant joke at least, just to make sure you had read the question. No but I did not mean that seriously, I was immediately delighted when TL posted.

Hmmm, I did remember that Bilbo felt very hot as he approached the dragon's lair and I found that reference, though I am too lazy to type it out and lazier still to go to the online version, but you can spot it in Inside Information as he descends to the tunnel. I'll post the reference next time. Now to perspire on some very jolly circuits... []

Well, Bilbo is one of the two mentioned. And we have a mention of Dwarves, but which one?

Draco Malfoy? What's a smart alec wizard kid doing in Minas Tirith? []

Wow Marcho that is some thorough research claiming just two instances. Your trivia is mindboggling. I cannot think of another, but if it's a dwarf then I am tempted...

Here's the reference I promised:

Also it was now undoubtedly hot in the tunnel. Wisps of vapour floated up and past him and he began to sweat .

One is quite obvious though I don't have the quote. That one would be Bombur. The other I would have to guess on that but I think it might be Dori because he always had to carry Bilbo. More than likly wrong but oh well

Now there are two?
Estel: I think Marcho said "which one?" and would trust him to mean just one dwarf. You have the best guesses though.

The book only specifically lists one dwarf and it is, naturally Bombur, while carrying Bilbo!

Estel, Estel where art thou? ? If you have a question please ask away. Otherwise I will ask one again. Here's the reference of Bombur carrying Bilbo:
quote:
"Why, O why did I ever leave my hobbit-hole!" said poor Mr. Baggins bumping up and down on Bombur's back.
"Why, O why did I ever bring a wretched little hobbit on a treasure hunt!" said poor Bombur, who was fat, and staggered along with the sweat dripping down his nose in his heat and terror.

Bungo: I must apologize for my ignorance about Jesus and God being one and the same. Not being a Christian I don't tend to remember the details, I knew he was Son of God, but somehow I was suddenly taken to believe he was a Messenger of God, that was the reason for the inappropriate comparison. Although I have read many stories taken from the Bible and some day hope to read it too to improve my knowledge.

I think I have a Q that is worthy enough to match your wit.

Since when has the plans of wise wizards and good friends gone astray?

Estel, sorry to answer your question so quickly, but I ran across that line the other day while looking for a "Who Said That" question. The answer is "on adventures in the wild." (or something to that effect). It was mentioned when the company left Rivendell for the Misty Mountains.

Given that you accept this answer, here is my question:

What animals in The Hobbit might we consider as having intelligence greater than the same animals in our own time?

I've counted eight. There may be more that I'm missing. However, I do not count Smaug since dragons don't exist in our time, nor do I count the Goblins or Gollum for the former reason and because they aren't (exactly) animals. Everything else is fair game... []

I don't have my book with me, but didn't all the small animals around the Shire recognize Bilbo's throwing skill and get out of his way if ever he reached for a rock?

Okay, that's a stretch, but it's a quiet day here.

Beorn's animals included the horses and many others:

The Ponies that brought in the seats and benches
The Dogs that set the table and placed the torches
The sheep that brought in the place settings

unfortunatly Munsund your assumtion is wrong. That is not the answ. You answered the where but not the when. To put it in simpler terms when did the "wild" begin

Hmmm, this is still from the same reference Musnud talked of:

quote:
Dwarves had not passed that way for many years, but Gandalf had, and he knew how evil and danger had grown and thriven in the Wild, since the dragons had driven men from the lands, and the goblins had spread in secret after the battle of the Mines of Moria . Even the good plans of wise wizards like Gandalf and of good friends like Elrond go astray sometimes when you are off on dangerous adventures over the Edge of the Wild; and Gandalf was a wise enough wizard to know it.
