Bungo that was a very cheeky question indeed, and I feel very lucky to post the answer (if I may suppose this is the answer that our Bungo was looking for)

By the way my Birthday is on the 4th of May, now don't forget to bring me presents []

Sorry, you big Lug. But your birthday, special as it is, is not celebrated around the world, by people who have never read the Hobbit, or otherwise.

Birthday parties in general are not the answer either.

Heheheh.

Well, this is really a nice surprise. I'm stumping even my esteemed colleague, the Master Shire Surveyor from Michigan State.

Sadly, no, MayDay is not what I had in mind, nor do I know how to celebrate MayDay. meanwhile, the occasion my question refers to is even celebrated in Hong Kong, though not as vigorously as in other countries I know of.

Now my only fear has to do with the different editions of The Hobbit. Mine, as I've mentioned before, is a dog-eared and well-read but recently published modern edition.

And now, alas, it's Bedtime for Bungo in Asia. I shall be back online in about ten hours, in case any of you campers stumbles upon the answer. Prepare to be amazed.

Birthdays not celebrated world over? I don't get any presents?

-----------

I found the Christmas tree reference after reading TL's post! But that's part of the narration!! Oh well, the question almost sounded as if the occasion was celebrated in Middle-Earth, but I guess that was never the case. []

Ah, the great trivia master! The Laurenendôrian is correct. Much more significant than a Christmas tree reference, Bilbo had a Yule-tide feast at Beorn's on the way home!

Now doesn't that open up a huge wonder? Had Jesus already been born?

Bungo: The Yule referred to there is similar to the New-Year and not the old English reference to Christmas celebrations.

Here's some information I found:
Yule
The festival at the turning of the year
Two days of the Shire Calendar that marked the end of an old year and the beginning of a new. 1 Yule (the last day of the old year) fell on modern 21 December, while 2 Yule, the first day of the new year, fell on modern 22 December.

------------
I am still extremely upset that I am not going to receive any birthday presents and believe that birthdays are far more universal than Christmas. More than half the world isn't part of the Christian faith but everyone has a birthday!! []

Don't mind me I am just beginning to get back to working on a new and tough project []

Point well taken, Lugbúrz. That must certainly be the Middle Earth meaning of 'Yule'. I'm still going to give TL the next go, since I was looking for Christmas but you have clarified that Jesus had not yet been to earth in the third age! (Although, He would have been Eru Himself, not just a lowly istari.) []

p.s. I'll have something sent to your dark tower on May 4th.

Why thank you so much Bungo! Make sure the present travels over the internet! It's been a while since I threw a birthday party, but one is on the cards for my fine friends from MT!

Of course TL should have the turn. Much better at question-lore and trivia-lore. I was merely stating that I was cross ;29That's an awesome smiley, the best! []

Heheheh.

Hey, I could send you a real present, couldn't we precious.

How about a boot-leg VCD of FOTR. Then you could vent and rage against such a travesty! (I haven't had the heart to view or purchase one yet. About 2 U.S. dollars.)

Well, I'm feeling impatient, so here is another question, albeit an easy one:

What significant item first appears in Chapter II and then only appears once more, in Chapter XVI?

----------
Do you refer to Thorin's letter to Bilbo Burglar?
----------
I would actually have bought the boot-leg VCD. I mean the movie has made its millions and the copyright is only effective here and in Europe. But please, please don't jeopardize me by sending me one. []

Well, yesss, you are correct about Thorin's letter. And okay, I won't bring the I.N.S. down on you like the plague by sending you illegal contraband in the postal service. Nothing says "Happy Birthday" quite like receiving a jail sentence.

Your go, Lugmeister.

Try this:

To what more mundane animals is Smaug likened?

Not all of the references are completely direct.

Okay, I'll start it off, and if I'm lucky, I've gotten them all:

Both a wicked worm and a worm
an immeasurable Bat
". . . and Smaug as tame as a rabbit."
". . . or I'm a Lizard."
The hollow in his left breast was a bare as a snail out of its shell.

An excellent beginning, Master Blackwood.

I had missed that 'snails' reference, but you do not have everything which I had found.

I was sure there was a cat reference someplace and while finding it I discovered two more:

a rumble as of a gigantic tom-cat purring
"I have eaten his people like a wolf among sheep"
floated heavy and slow in the dark like a monstrous crow.

That was a very nice question, have you exhausted your list? You seem to have mentioned an indirect reference? I should say Marcho's list would take a while to find, forget the question in its original form

I expect this one to be relatively easy, given that it is related to some other questions asked in the not too distant past!

What location mentioned in The Hobbit would be a child's favorite place to visit?

How? How how !! How do I get to the toy-market in Dale ? Does somebody know the way? Huh? Huh? Anyone?
---------
I think I am confident that is correct, given my eagerness [] Here's another simple one:
List all objects worn on the body, partly as an ornament, that are mentioned in the Hobbit

My count is 5, all pretty direct. To make it more interesting you could mention what materials these objects were known to be made of.

Well, it gets a bit questionable. Who can say whether Gandalf's hat was worn partially for appearance?

Gandalf wears a silver scarf; I imagine that it wouldn't have such an unusual colour if it was purely functional. There are of course the diamond cufflinks, and Bilbo's waistcoats. Apart from that, I can think of nothing off-hand.
