Was thinking of posting this earlier,

Welcome to the Trivia thread Belegurth, forgive me if you have been here before but I don't remember reading a post by you in this thread. Now I have some company as a newcomer.

Lugbúrz, we need to differentiate between 'source' and 'reflection'.

Ah, Bungo but that was indeed the trick in the question. If you read the paragraph in the book, you will note that the darkness is described in detail and is said to be complete: meaning pitch black and devoid of light. And then goes on to say that the only thing you could perhaps see were "gleam"ing eyes: no reflection possible if there wasnt another source right? Also mentioned are 3 different colors: yellow, red and green. Seems more of a source...

Well, let's see:

The oil was in reference to the lamps at Bilbo's house. I've seen lanterns with oil or candles, but only oil in lamps.

quote:
Their gloaming (in most editions, gleaming) hair was twined with flowers; green and white gems glinted on their collars and their belts; and their faces and their songs were filled with mirth. Loud and clear and fair were those songs, and out stepped Thorin into their midst.
So the real question here is whether the it was 'glowing' as indicated by the use of the word gloaming, or gleaming as in a reflection.

Okay, that was rather fun and enlightening! (No groans, please!) So let's do something similar.

Name the domesticated animals specifically mentioned or implied in The Hobbit.

My count is nine specific, one implied and one other 'sometimes is but don't think so here.' With any luck, we'll discover one or two more!

Note: There is one that is specifically mentioned, but I'll bet most of you infer it from the implication and miss the specific mention. (Nero Wolfe would be so proud of me!)

Dragons of course!

Ok let us see how this goes:

Cattle (cows?), horses, bees (insects?), ponies (same as horses?), dogs, sheep, &ram

... []

Well! Pretty fast work! Here's what we have so far->

Cat - from riddles
Horse - Multiple including Beorn's
Pony - Multiple including Beorn's and the start
Bees - Beorn's
Dog - Beorn's and others
Sheep (Ram being the male and also implied by mutton)
Pigs - implied only via pork and bacon
Chicken - also implied by eggs

Cows - (It is easily inferred from milk, cream and butter, but can you find the specific mention!?)

And one other! (Which happens to be near the specific cow mention!)
And the 'maybe but don't thinks so here'! And I don't mean the eagles!

Well, the specific cow mention, if I remember our past conversations correctly, is kine, and sure enough 'oxen' pops up right next to that.

Could the other one be the fish in Gollum's cave?

Well done, Lug and TL! Wondered if someone would remember the old 'kine.'

Cattle normally refers to food cows, beef and milk type. Oxen? Maybe, but are normally beasts of burden. (Hmm, interesting search through the dictionary. Specific entries for Cow and Ox, both related to bovine and cow is appropriate for any bovine regardless of age or gender, so it looks like cow does include oxen. And kine is the archaic plural of cow.)

The 'maybe, but don't think so here' catagory was Rabbit.

I'll let the two of you fight it out for next question!

I don't think so, Lugbúrz; I'm off to bed pretty soon, and I don't have a question ready. Besides which, you got almost all of the answers. Your turn.

Vegeta,

By all means! Join in! The rules are pretty simple. The person who answers the question correctly asks the next question. If there is more than 24 hours since a question was asked, anyone may ask one. If the answer isn't obvious, wait for the asker to verify the answer.

We are currently waiting on the next question! Sometimes it takes days for someone to finally get the answer, sometimes only minutes!

Darnit! I knew that kine and oxen one right off the bat (because I was planning on using that one on my next turn [] ).
Unfortunately I had classes to teach during that three hour stretch. You lucky businesspersons that can access the Internet at any time. I envy you all... *tongue planted firmly in cheek* []

Ok I have an interesting question here:

[Edit: I shall venture to call this the question about stumps after reading one of Bungo's puns]

When Bilbo and the dwarves entered Mirkwood, what were the trees that surrounded them?

The only reference I see of 'type' of tree is an oak tree. The one Bilbo had to climb?

While hanging from an eagle's talons, Bilbo identified what "looked like oaks and elms".

If your question is specifically concerned with 'when they entered Mirkwood', then I would guess mainly 'Elms' because of their gnarled twisted limbs and black leaves. And for their analogies to darkness and death, etc.

However, if you are looking for the general tree population that would have been represented at any given point, including their entry point, then I would include beeches as well, since they were the elves' favorite and appear in JRR's drawing like a beech orchard around the elvenking's cave, but would not necessarily be growing exclusively there.

So, either elms or elms, oaks and beeches. I'm guessing.
