Gefax Address Book Version 0.4

Gefax is designed to use your existing Gnome Address Book (GnomeCard).
When you run Gefax the first time, it will try to open an address book called ~/.cardfile. If no address book is found a message box will appear to notify you.
Although the interface is similar to use to prevent users needing to learn how to use yet another address book, the gefax address book will never be powerfull enough to replace GnomeCard. However, it is the authors intention to provide enough functionality to enable you to add and edit contacts (or cards).
Before you can send a fax with Gefax you must have the contact in your address book. In addition, you must specify at least one fax number. The Gefax address book will allow you to add up to 4 fax numbers that can all be accessed when selecting a fax recipient.
TIP Gefax will automatically read the last opened address book when run so you don't need to open your address book each time you want to send a fax.

Creating a New Address Book

If you don't have an existing address book, just add contacts to the blank address book and click on the "Save As" toolbar button. Select a filename for your address book and click OK.
Gefax will now open the new address book each time it is run.

Opening/Changing Address Books

To open an existing address book click on the "Open Address Book" button on the main toolbar and then selecting the file in the displayed file selection dialog. The address book will be read on clicking the OK button.
To change your address book simply open the address book as described above. Gefax will automatically close the current address book for you.

Filtering Contacts

By default, Gefax will display all contacts. You can filter the contacts by the first letter (or number) of the persons last name. To do this click on the appropriate toggle button located at the bottom of the Gefax Address book. To view all contacts again, click again to release the button.

Editing Existing Contacts

To edit an existing contact, select the contact in the columned list and then click on the "Edit Contact" toolbar button. This will open the Gefax "Edit Contact" dialog box.
Alternatively, double clicking on a contact will achieve the same result.

Identity Tab

If you are familiar with GnomeCard, the Identity tab will second nature. If not, you will notice that fields are grouped inside frames to show the relevence of each field.
Gefax version 0.4 will not allow you to change the birthdate. This field will be added soon
NOTE The "File As" field is mandantory. The contact will not changed if this field is left blank!

Address Tab

To edit an address, select the address from the Address List. The details will now be shown in the Address Information text boxes for you to edit
After editing the address click on the Edit button to update the address. You may also wish to add addresses or delete addresses. To add an address, enter the address and then select the type of address from the Type combo box
If the address type does not already exist, the add button will allow you to add the address to the list. To delete an address, select the address and click on the Delete button.

Phone Tab

Editing, adding and deleting telephone numbers is very similar to addresses.
Just remember that you will need at least one "Fax" number in order to send a fax with Gefax

Adding New Contacts

To add a new contact, select the contact and click on the "Add Contact" toolbar button. This will show an identical dialog box to the Edit dialog box, only this time the fields are blank.
Enter the necessary information and click on the close button. For more information read the above section "Editing Existing Contacts".
The new contact can now be faxed in Gefax.

Deleting Existing Contacts

To delete a contact, select the contact and then click on the "Delete Contact" toolbar button.
NOTE If you accidently delete the wrong contact, close Gefax without saving the address book. When Gefax is restarted the contact will reappear.

Saving Your Address Book

In order to save any changes to your address book, you must save it manually. You will know if it is necessary to save by the sensitivity of the "Save" toolbar button.
Simply click on this button to save the address book.
You may wish to save a copy of the address book. To do this click the "Save as" toolbar button. WARNING Although I have tested the file format well on my computer, it is advisable to only edit a copy of your address book with Gefax for the time being.
There is no danger of harming you existing address book if you never save because the file is read Read Only by Gefax.
