Chapter 8
After Matt got dressed, he and Jeff decided to go and hangout with Jay and Adam down in the lounge. They started a game of pool. They were all standing round bullshitting about nothing important, when Chris Jericho walked in started talking with them. Chris decided to join in the game.
Matt was drinking a beer as Jeff came around and leaned against the wall next to Matt. Matt could feel Jeff’s eyes on him, and he glanced to see that Jeff sure enough was staring at him.
“What’s wrong?” Matt asked setting his drink down on the table next to him, feeling sort of uneasy, he turned looking back at Jeff.
Jeff looked confused, “Just out of curiosity, did you tell Jessica about the WWF and why you’re really here?” He asked watching Matt.
Matt looked down and closed his eyes, without opening them or looking up. Matt answered softly, “No”... Jeff interrupted him.
“No!” Jeff exclaimed. Matt looked up at him. Jeff saw the weary look on his friend’s face, “Matt she didn’t recognize you? Because she sure as hell didn’t recognize me that I’m sure of.” Jeff asked watching him.
“No I guess not, maybe she doesn’t watch wrestling. I dunno, Matt said looking at Jeff. Jeff broke in again.
“Why didn’t you tell her?” Jeff asked looking very amazed and kind of confused.
Matt shrugged, “I couldn’t,” Matt said in a sad sounding tone, being interrupted once again.
“You couldn’t.....why not?” Jeff asked looking sort of disgusted.
“I was afraid...” Matt said softly looking around, not wanting to kill the up beat mood of the game around them. Jeff obviously realizing that Matt didn’t want to talk about it with everyone around, excused the two of them and dragged Matt out into the hallway.
“Afraid of what?” Jeff asked touching Matt’s arm quickly.
Matt took a deep breathe, “Of losing her....” Matt whispered sliding down the wall and sitting on the floor. Jeff knelt down next to him. Neither one of them spoke for a long time.
“Matt,” Jeff asked finally, “why would you lose her?”
Matt shrugged. “I’d lose her if she knew....” Matt paused not finishing.
“Knew what?” Jeff asked shaking Matt’s shoulder gently.
Matt was staring down at the carpet, his eye lashes lowered and touched his cheeks.
“Jeff I lied to her,” Matt said very softly.
“Lied to her about what?” Jeff asked looking at Matt.
Matt took a long deep breath and stared at Jeff. “About everything.”
“Everything as in what?? Jeff asked trying to be patient.
Matt sighed.
“Just tell me Matt!” Jeff said trying to get Matt to spill it.
“Jeff dude, I didn’t tell her about the WWF, I lied and told her that I was going to be building a deck today with a friend and a cousin so I could get out of seeing her ‘till later tonight, even though I’m dying to see her. I lied and told her that I was here for a few days on vacation, I lied about practically everything,” Matt said as he rested his head in his hands and sighed heavily.
“Matt why were so you so afraid to tell her about the WWF?” Jeff asked sighing to himself.
Matt groaned, “Jeff every time I start to care about someone, in telling them about my job, about the WWF, I always seem to lose them. I was just lucky sort of I guess with Lita, I was lucky I fell for a wrestler.... but I didn’t this time...” Matt didn’t continue.
Jeff felt really bad for his friend. Even though deep down he really didn’t like the idea of Matt being with Jessica. Jeff sighed, patting Matt’s shoulder.
“Matt dude,” Jeff asked softly, “Do you really like her that much?”
Matt closed his eyes, and finally spoke, even though it was barely above a whisper. “Yeah, Jeff I do.”
They both sat there in silence for a long time.
Jeff broke the silence.
“Well Matt if you really like her and you care about her, then you know what you gotta do.......you have to tell her the truth.” Jeff said softly as he stood looking down at Matt.
Matt didn’t speak for a few seconds then he looked up at Jeff.
“Man you’re right, I gotta be honest, if I lose her then it wasn’t meant to be, but I can’t lie about it, mostly because I’m a horrible liar!” Jeff started chuckling as he helped Matt up.
“You gonna be okay?” Jeff asked smiling at him.
“Yeah Jeff I’ll be okay.” Matt said smiling weakly.
Jeff grinned. “Come on lets go finish the game of pool huh?” He asked as he turned to go back to the lounge.
“Yeah okay!” Matt said following Jeff back to the lounge, feeling a little better.
