During the top speed runs they saw how both models were indeed electronically restricted. In a previous test, the 2000 models were able to reach over 190mph (with a tailwind)yet these 2001 models were cutting out at or below 186mph. Off the showroom floor the Ninja put out a 185+mph run while the Busa gave a 183+mph run.... after a being derestricted with electronic modules (TRE for the Busa, Yellowbox for the Ninja)... they were ready for action. To aid their efforts both bikes were given an aftermarket exhaust, power commander, K&N airfilter, remap, AFAM sprockets, and had mirrors removed. Both bikes woke up dramatically with the Kawasaki slamming down a 193.5mph run and the Busa peeling off a 191.3mph run. Keep in mind this was done in the desert heat with no tailwind aiding their efforts.

At the drag strip they lowered both bikes and regeared them accordingly. In stock trim, the neutered Busa slugged by at 10.23@140mph while the neutered Ninja popped off a 9.95@144mph.... after the mods the Busa put down a 9.688 but later suffered a clutch failure due to inproper installation of the aftermarket clutch installed previously. The Kawasaki put down a 9.573 on the 2nd pass, then backed it up with a 9.583 on the 3rd pass. The Busa was given the stock plates and a set of stiffer clutch springs, which indeed did the trick and the Busa popped off a 9.559, making the best pass of the day... inching by the Kawasaki by 0.014 seconds. Of course, there were only a few runs done on each bike... surely more passes would have yeilded even better times for both bikes.

On the road test, they found the stock Busa to be somewhat peppier than it looked in the canyons, but with the TRE installed to bypass the limiter, they found the throttle response more abrupt. On the stock Ninja they said the twitchy throttle response through the RPM's made acceleration through corners tougher, but after the pipe/remap all problems were solved and the ZX is said to have transformed into a bike that QUOTE: "Makes a Sunday ZX12R ride in the twisties a much more attractive proposition".
