Garden Grove's Information Systems was a division
of the Controller's Office. They manage a Linux/Samba/D3 Network that consists of 6 production
Linux Servers and over 320 Window 95/Linux Desktop Clients.
The division consisted of:
Robert Shingledecker; IS Manager
Pyng Chang, and Charles Kalil; Senior Systems Analysts
Victor Chang; Information Systems Technician
Under my direct hands-on leadership, moved the City from a closed proprietary mini-computer, a Data General running Universe via dumb terminals, to a state of the art Linux based wide area network. The City's database is Pick System's D3 database. The database is accessed both by conventional character based screens via telnet as well as through web applications. Both the City's internet and intranet sites are being run on a Linux servers using the Apache web server. The Printing and File sharing is being handled by Samba, an SMB/CIFS networking program also running on Linux.
You may have read about Garden Grove in the news lately. We have been featured in various trade publications as well as in newspapers like the OC Register and the Wall Street Journal. That is because the City has been using the Linux operating system on its servers since early 1995, making us one of the first organizations to adopt it into mainstream use. Today Linux is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more organizations are discovering how powerful and stable it is.
