CENTRE ON AGEING AND NEURODEGENERATIVE
DISEASES (CEEN)
CEEN is a multidisciplinary centre promoting teaching and research in normal and pathological ageing, mainly concerning Alzheimer´s type dementia and mild cognitive impairment, since 2001. Its research staff is also multidisciplinary having professors from the Psychology Faculty of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), neurologist´s professors from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and neurologists from different hospitals from the regional health consortium (IMSALUD) as the Fundación Hospital Alcorcón. Other neurologists from the Hospital Clínico de San Carlos, Hospital de La Paz, Fundación Jiménez Díaz and Hospital Virgen del Puerto of Plasencia, also collaborate with our research team. Our research mainly deals with indicators for cognitive impairment such as olfactory sensitivity, stress, haptic priming and semantic, explicit and implicit memory. New measurements and a Semantic Impairment Battery (EMSDA-1) of tests have been built for our research and both have shown a high predicting capability. Our research projects on these subjects have been financed by the European Union, Ministry of Science and Education, Madrid Regional Community, Las Rozas Municipal Government, Regional Health Ministry (IMSERSO), National Organization for the Blind (ONCE) and Caja Madrid. Our group has organized national and international congresses, conferences and seminars. Our teaching area includes relevant post-graduate courses as: the Honour PhD Program on Ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases (approved from its start in 2003 to 2005 by the Spanish Science and Education Ministry http://www.uned.es/psico-doctorado-envejecimiento/index.htm), Summer Courses (http://www.uneddenia.org and http://www.unedmerida.org), a Master Degree and an Expert Degree (http://www.uned.es/master-gerontologia/). In the clinical area, CEEN offers counselling in neuropsychological assessment and cognitive intervention programs for elderly people and Alzheimer´s patients. Training for elderly care is also given. CEEN
collaborates with private and public institutions such as: Centro de Día
de Enfermos de Alzheimer de la Diputación de Sevilla (Day Care
Centre), Centro de Mayores del Equipo Quirúrgico del Ayuntamiento
de Sevilla (Centre for the Elderly), and other centres as CALENDAS, ASISTTEL,
Residencia de Mayores Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Tocina, Fundación
María Wolf and the Asociación de Alzheimer Santa Elena.
