Our first tournament was launched at Texas public launch near site 7. Tommy Brooks was tournament chairman for the first tournament of the year. The story for this one was tough for a lot of folks except for Mat Hooker who took first place with 15 pounds 3 ounces. He also hung the big bass 5 pounds 14 ounces. Tommy Brooks came in second place with 8 pounds 1 ounce and second for big bass 5 pounds 12 ounces. And yes, Felisha Hooker, Mat’s wife, took third place with 7 pounds 9 ounces. Way to go girl. The main ticket for Mat was fishing the grass flats with crank baits, letting the wind push the boat over the flats. So for all you folks out there happy fishing and come see us on the web at angelfire.com/la3/wcbc .
Mat's Input: "
I'm sorry that I am late getting this information to you. I don't check my
e-mail at home but every 4 or 5 days. I guess I need to get into the habit
of checking it more often. I didn't know you had a newsletter. Maybe if I
ever win again I'll be ready to send you some information in time. But,
maybe late is better than never. Now, according to my map of Toledo we
caught 7 of the 10 fish in the mouth of Buck Creek in about 14-16 feet of
water on orange crankbaits. Mine was a Strike King that dove about 12 feet.
Alisha's was a Bill Norman Deep Littl' N. I probably spent 6 out of the 8
fishing hours in an area about an acre in size that I accidentally stumbled
upon in the fog. I couldn't see the bank or the next buoy, saw grass pop up
on the depth finder and decided to stop and fish. It turned out to be a good
decision. My crankbait rod is a Falcon 7' rod with a 5500-C3 Ambassaduer
reel. The other 3 fish caught were on points near the Texas Islands. I was
fishing these points to shelter myself from the wind. I did catch 1 fish on
a Carolina rig.
I would also like to say that we had a great time fishing with you
fellows. I look forward to getting to know ya'll better and fishing the rest
of the year with you. I have been looking hard for a club that was nothing
but a group of guys who love to fish and want to have fun doing it.
Hopefully I can fit right in. Again, thank you for the opportunity to join
up. I hope the information above is the kind of stuff you were looking for.
See you at the next meeting. Good fishin' "
