How do blizzards form?

In the Northwest side of a big snow storm large winds start to occur. Thats because of the difference in air pressure between the West and the storm. The fast winds combine with snow to form extreme conditions. Blizzards usually occur when the jet stream dips low in the south. Its because the cold air in the north mixes with the warm air from the south.

What's the difference between a snow storm and a blizzard?

In a blizzard the winds must be 35 mph or greater. Also visiblity must be reduced to at least a quarter of a mile.

Where are the areas most effected?

The central plains of the United States between Mexico and Canada are hit the most by blizzards. Its because they are right in the middle of warm and cold air fronts.

How can you stay protected?

In a house:
Working flashlight, radio or TV, extra food, water, medicine, first aid supplies, heating fuel, emergency heating source, fire extinguisher and smoke detector.
In a vehicle:
Winterize your vehicle, full-up gas tank, don’t travel alone, let a friend know your timetable for travel, carry a WINTER STORM SURVIVAL KIT
Caught Outside:
Find a dry shelter. Cover all exposed parts of the body. If shelter is not available:
  • Prepare a lean-to, wind break, or snow-cave for protection from the wind.
  • Build a fire for heat and to attract attention. Place rocks around the fire to absorb and reflect heat.
  • Do not eat snow. It will lower your body temperature. Melt it first.
Stranded in a Vehicle:
  • Stay in your car or truck!
  • Run the motor about ten minutes each hour. Open the windows a little for fresh air to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked.
  • Make yourself visible to rescuers:
    • Turn on the dome light at night when running the engine.
    • Tie a colored cloth to your antenna or door
    • Raise the hood after the snow stops falling
  • Exercise to keep blood circulating and to keep warm
Stranded in a Building:
  • Stay inside!
  • If there is no heat:
    • Close off uneeded rooms
    • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors
    • Cover windows at night
    • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy and heat. Fluids prevent dehydration.
    • Wear layers of loose-fitting, light-weight, warm clothing.
