Rock Bridge's Dental Assisting Program consists of classroom training and clinical experience in area dental offices.
The curriculum provides the training necessary to become an integral part of the dental profession and offers the student both supervised training to become a dental assistant and the educational requirements to prepare for the Certified Dental Assistants exam. Dental assisting is a profession requiring manual dexterity, being friendly, good grooming, and good interpersonal communication skills. The Dental Assisting is a six month training program with classroom training and hands on clinical training. Selected admission to the Dental Assisting program is based on a completed application, program availability, a personal interview and the ability to complete the program with a "c" or better. The Dental Assisting Department will assist graduates with job placement in many locations throughout Louisiana, as well as in other states.Job opportunities for graduates exist in:
- Solo/group general dental practices and clinics specialty dental practices (orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics and pediatric dentistry)
- Hospitals
- State and local public health facilities
- Insurance companies
- Dental sales
- Dental research
- Business assistant
- Office manager
Duties and Responsibilities
Dental assisting duties vary somewhat from state to state. Duties routinely performed by dental assistants in Louisiana include, but are not limited to:
Assisting the dentist chairside with procedures such as oral evacuation, transferring dental instruments and dental charting. Working independently to place a rubber dam, receiving dental/medical information, providing oral hygiene/nutrition consultations, and applying pit and fissure sealants Exposing and processing dental radiographs educating patients about dental diseases, plaque control, proper home care, and reduce patient anxiety creating study models, temporary crowns, custom trays and mixing a wide variety of dental materials in a laboratory environment. Maintaining an aseptic dental environment through disinfection and sterilization techniques. Managing the business/financial aspects of a dental practice (i.e., preparing insurance forms, scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, and bookkeeping) ordering dental practice supplies and controlling inventory. - Assist the dentist in the comprehensive treatment and education of patients, serving as an integral part of the dental health care team
- Perform a full range of dental assisting functions, as defined by the American Dental Association, in a variety of dental practice settings
- Employ decision-making and communications skills in providing educational and health care services to special population groups in the community.
- Establish learning habits that will lead to the graduate’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge through continuing education and other relevant sources of information.
- Integrate knowledge of the basic, social, and dental sciences in assessing and performing dental assisting procedures.
