This is the procedure I use for a fresh installation of Windows 95 on my
computers at home. I have used this procedure on systems that I have built as
well as systems that I have purchased and systems that have proprietary software
if you want to take this proprietary software off such as Hewlett Packard and
Packard Bell systems. Be sure and type these syntax's exactly as shown and do
not use the quotation marks.They are used only in my text so as you may distinguish
the syntax from the rest of the text. To start you will need 2 items and you
can't do it without them.You must have a Win95 start updisk, and a
CDrom drive start up disk. They can be downloaded from the link below. The Cdrom drive disk will work with most IDE CDrom drives. You will also need your Win95 CD
1. Install the Win95 Startup disk and then boot your computer up,it will come up
to an dos mode A prompt
2. Type in the syntax "format C:" then hit the Enter key. This cleans everything
off of your hard drive and your PC will ask you for conformation of this
command.
3. Once your PC has finished the formatting process it will ask you label the
volume.I never label the volume as you can do this from within Windows. To
not label the volume just leave it blank and hit the Enter key.
4. Type in the syntax "SYS C:" and hit the Enter key. This will install the
system files from the startup disk to the hard drive.
5. Type in the syntax "EDIT" and hit the Enter key. After the edit program is up
and running,hit the Alt key{this will scroll you through the options at the top
of the page}and select File,then hit the Enter key.Arrow down to Save As and
hit the Enter key.
6. Use the Tab key to scroll through the options and select Directories,then arrow
down and select C:.Using the Tab key tab back to file name and type in
"C:Autoexec.Bat" and hit the Enter key.
7. Now use the Alt key to go back to File and select save as again.It is already
in the C: Directory so in the File name box type "Config.Sys" and hit the
Enter key. Now Alt back to File and select the Exit option and hit the Enter
key.{you have just created your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files}
8. Type "C:" Then hit the Enter key {C: prompt will come up}
9. Type "MD DOS" Then hit the Enter key
10. Type "CD DOS" Then hit the Enter key
11. Install CDrom Startup disk into your floppy drive and {assuming that your drive
is labled A:}type in "copy A:\MSCDEX.EXE" Then hit the Enter key
12. Type "A" Then hit the Enter key {A: prompt will come up}
13. Type "INSTALL" Then hit the Enter key. Simple Install screen should come up.
On this screen click Enter to Continue and Enter to OK.{this will install DOS
drivers and will enable the drive after you reboot}
14. Remove all disk and restart your PC.It should now boot to a C:prompt
15. Install the Win95 CD into the CDrom drive and then type in "D:" {or whatever
letter was assigned to your drive} and this will bring up an D: prompt,then
type in "SETUP" and hit the Enter key.
16. Follow the prompts to install Windows.
