Lines to Novitiate
Ricaredo Demetillo
Your prose is unadorned
As any hammer is.
It smashes down to shape
Truth's luminosities.
You smash down idols, too.
The tinny gods are bared.
You unfrock the hypocrite;
Only the weak are spared.
The dark soutanes hide trysts
With flaring thighs and breasts.
Lewd tremolos escape
The lips of novitiates!
You are a bludgeon, sir,
With gown and crucifix.
You are that rare, bold thing:
A conscience that attacks.
