Final Conclusion

ATV Locker contents

By: Larry Riley II

The ATV LockerTM, is a small piece of precision-machined steel that is inserted into a 4x4 ATV's front differential. It converts the stock limited slip differential into a fully locked, positive traction type differential.

The ATV LockerTM arrived at my door at around 1:00 p.m. Monday Feb. 1st. I had been expecting its arrival since the previous Wednesday. My quad, which is a '98 Yamaha Big Bear 4x4, had been sitting with its diff. removed since the Wed. of the lockers expected arrival. Now that the kit had arrived I was anxious to see what it consisted of!

When the UPS deliverer handed me the carton, I was surprised at how light it was. It only weighed ONE pound, according to the shipment label. I was expecting it to weight more to say the least. Now I was definitely curious about what the kit consisted of. After checking the label to make sure that I had the right package, I proceeded to open it. Inside I found its contents to include: two copies of the invoice, instructions, (1) High LifterTM decal, two 0.02 FL. OZ. tubes of LOCTITE 271TM, one 1.5 OZ. tube of Permatex(product of LOCTITETM) gasket sealant, (2) lockers, and (1) ATV LockersTM/ High LifterTM T-shirt.

The lockers themselves, are the actual parts that lock your diff. They replace your slip clutch discs', turning your limited slip diff. into a fully locked gear drive. This in effect gives your quad "true-fwd", allowing all four wheels equal torque at all times. What this in turn does, is it allows your quad to go places it couldn't before. A locker stops the annoying "3-wheel" effect, which happens when one front tire leaves the ground and spins uselessly while the other just sits there doing nothing. Each locker is about the size of a silver dollar in diameter and little more than one-eighth inch thick, with a "notched" circle in the center, which is a little more than an inch in diameter. I was somewhat disappointed that so little cost me so much. I decided that it probably took ATV Lockers Inc. a great deal of time in designing the lockers and that it would still work the same. Also, positive-traction kits for autos are about the same only larger of course. As long as they did the job I wouldn't complain, besides, I did get a T-shirt. So it was settled, no complaining, just install it and see how it works.
