----------->Through my various dane breeding projects over the past three years or so, I have discovered that danes don't come in only one size. The two extremes, Giant and Mini, are the rarest, and either take many, many generations or hexed lines. Regular and Small, however, are slightly more common. Regular, naturally, is the size that most danes are. Small, however, usually appears after a few generations of careful breeding. Not all Smalls are alike, but usually they range from about five to five-and-a-half units high (see high charts above), as opposed to their larger "Regular"-sized relatives, who usually range from about six to almost seven.

----------->Besides size in terms of Giant, Regular, Small, and Mini, Danes also come in two basic body types: Full and Lean. Mistakenly, many amateurs believe that all danes are supposed to look like "Full" danes, and that danes who are "Lean" are underfed. This is not true. I allow my danes to eat their fill. If they want seconds, they can have them. If they want thirds, fourths, etc., they can have that, too. I also feed my danes a variety of food, so they are not undernourished either. I have simply come to the conclusion, that danes, like people, come in different sizes. Confused? The small and mini danes above are examples also of what I call "Lean" danes. The Regular-sized dane is a "Full" dane. For an example of a Lean Regular-sized dane, [Click here]. You can compare that dane to Caesar (the Full-Regular-sized black dane pictured above), and notice the difference. Both danes are obviously "Regular" in size, but the blue dane is definitely not of the same body type. Though Small danes usually tend to have the Lean body type, they can also have the Full-body type, which is most usually seen in Small danes that are at the slightly larger end of the scale (for obvious reasons).

----------->I have presented this guide to you, so that you know that coat and muzzle color are not the only traits that you can breed for. You can breed for size, body build, eye color, or eyelid color as well. I will try to give as many examples as possible for each color and size, to help guide you in your dane breeding endeavors.
