John Ziba Hardee

Including Descendants of Both Marriages To:

Peggy Mitchell and Tabitha Brooks

The Family of John Ziba Hardee would like to express our deepest appreciation for the geneological kindness and generosity of Wallace Mitchell and Robert Hall. Without them, we would know little of this new information.

I am going to put this early information online - but I am also going to tell you that it is a genealogical hallucination on my part. I am 99% certain it is correct, but the British seem to have burned the records. Ah! Well - We will just do the best we can with what we have to work with. Once we get back at least two more generations, we can work forward from there and, perhaps, resolve all doubt.

John Ziba Hardee was born about 1782, in North Carolina. I am reasonably certain that his origins were in Pitt County, since the Hardee, Brown, Carr, Ward, Etheredge, Jones, Davis, Taylor, Brooks, and Mitchell families were all living near each other in that county at the time of his birth, and would continue to intermarry and migrate together for several generations.

John Ziba Hardee, we now believe, was the son of John Hardee. His mother, as yet, is unknown. John Ziba Hardee, as far as can now be ascertained, was living in Jones County, Georgia, sometime before the age of 11. We have always looked for him in Baldwin County. Who knew that Jones County had been cut out of Baldwin County in 1807?

Sometime prior to 1793, John Hardee (the father) left North Carolina for the new frontier of Georgia. He brought his family with him, including his young son John Ziba. Upon arriving in Georgia, John Hardee settled in the 6th District of Jones County but, ultimately, did business in Baldwin, Bibb, Monroe, Putnam, and Morgan Counties. He had property to be sold by the Sheriff on several occasions. At one time, two promissory notes, in Jones County, were lost and his name, John Hardy of Jones County, was on one of them, as reported by Sherod H. Horn. One of the Horns is referred to in other documents as Hardy Horn. It is unknown, at this time, whether Sherod H. Horn is this same Hardy Horn.

The reason we know John Hardee (and that is the correct spelling) was in Jones County before 1793 is that he filed a claim with the government, against the Creek Nation, for stealing a horse. The claim was for damages that occurred in Jones County, in 1793, and was for the sum of $75. The claim was not filed until the 1830s, as was the case with so many other claims.

We now know that our Hardee family was living near Drury B. Mitchell, in Jones County, GA, from before 1793 until the grown children of the two families migrated to Alabama, in the 1820s.

I now believe, from a preponderance of circumstantial evidence, that Peggy Mitchell is the daughter of Drury B. Mitchell and first wife, Sarah Patsy Taylor. Two of Drury B. Mitchell's daughters, by second wife Rhoda Lassiter, married Brooks brothers. If I am correct, Peggy Mitchell was Tabitha Brooks' aunt. However - Please do not rush this concept into a database. I have not yet been able to prove it. I have put this online in order to ask for help and "fresh eyes" to look at it. If someone, just trolling the net for names to put in a database, puts this on Ancestry.com without proof, I will personally put a "Post-It Note" on it - and would hope that everyone else in the Hardee, Mitchell, and Brooks families would add their own "Post-It Note" to it. This early information is a "best guess" - and, for now, that is all it can be.

Marriage to Peggy Mitchell

Ziba Hardee grew up in Jones County, GA and married Peggy Mitchell, the girl two pages over in the census, in Baldwin County, Georgia, on Feb. 4, 1813. Some transcriptions put the date as Feb. 7. Ziba Hardee and Peggy Mitchell became the parents of two sons, Joel (1814-1879) and John (1816-1899/1900). I now believe that the growing little family of John Ziba Hardee and Peggy Mitchell resided, from the beginning, in Jones County, GA, near Peggy's father, Drury B. Mitchell; and that both Joel and John were born there. From a comparison of census records to Toulmin's Alabama Digest, the window of migration from Jones County, GA to Monroe County, AL, closed so tightly that the move could only have taken place in 1821. Peggy was still living in 1822, but died prior to 1825. This gives us an approximate date of Peggy Mitchell's death as 1823/1824. We do not, as yet, know where she is buried, but more cemetery information is coming online every day. We will find her.

The descendants of John Ziba Hardee and Peggy Mitchell continue to search for hard evidence concerning the parents and siblings of this couple. If you can help with documented proof of their identies, we would be deeply appreciative.

Marriage to Tabitha Brooks

Ziba Hardee married fifteen year old Tabitha Brooks about 1825. Ziba and Tabitha became the parents of ten children: Sarah Jane, James Thomas, Martha Ellen, William Thomas, Samuel B., Bryant Stidwell, Thomas, Subbitha Caroline, Julia Ann, Pinkney Taylor. About 1837, Ziba and Tabbitha moved from Monroe County, AL, to Coosa County, AL. Joel and John, both now married, migrated with their father and his new family. Approximately ten years later, Joel and John, Ziba's sons from his first marriage, moved their households back to Monroe County, Alabama, where they lived out their long and productive lives.

Ziba Hardee moved his second family from Coosa County, Alabama, to Van Zandt County, Texas, in the late 1850s. I believe that move took place about 1856. All remained in Texas except Bryant Stidwell Hardee, who returned to Monroe County, Alabama, and settled near his half-brother John Hardee. Ziba Hardee died in 1862 and is buried in Red Hill Frontier Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas, near his old home. The descendants of his second marriage remain in that area of Texas today.

There is going to be a 2007 Reunion of the John Ziba Hardee Descendants June 1 & 2. It will include the Sirmons and all allied families, and is being graciously hosted by one of the descendant families at their horse ranch. Please contact the webmaster Carol Scott or Sonny Perry for information about where to send your check and for detailed directions to the ranch. More reunion information, including where to spend the night, is available on the Home Page. Just click the link at the bottom of this page to go there. It is also my understanding that a few of the 2000 "Blue Books" are still available at a cost of $25.

Corrections Thus Far

Emma Hardee was not the daughter of John Ziba Hardee. She was the daughter of William Thomas (son of John Ziba) and Mrs. N. V. Turner (his second wife). Emma was the twin to Bryant Boone Hardee. She did die young. She is buried at Sardis Cemetery in Ellis Co., TX, where William Thomas Hardee is buried. The following appears on their headstones:

Hardee, W. T... DOB: 10 Mar 1834? DOD: 12 --- 1893 Location: B5 36 Inscription: An angel visited the green earth and took thee away.

Hardee, Emma... DOB: 24 Jul 1889 DOD: 29 Nov 1891 Location: B5 35 Inscription: Weep not father and mother for I am waiting in glory for thee / Daughter of W.T. and N.V.

Susan Hardee Spears was not the daughter of John Ziba Hardee and has been removed from the Table of Contents.

The goal of this project is to have a web page, complete with pictures, for each of the families listed in this Table of Contents. I will be happy to link to your pages, or to create a site for you if you need one. All you have to do is e-mail and let me know what you need.
