Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University, as the result of encouragement given by A. Langston and Charles Taylor. These five coeds dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for Black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of scholarship, service, sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. For eight-two years, the trail blazed by the founders has been traversed by thousands of women dedicated to the emulation of the objectives and ideals of the Sorority.
The Iota Omicron Zeta Chapter was chartered on Monday, June 18, 1979 as the result of members in the Delta Epsilon Zeta Chapter (West Palm Beach) and Pi Eta Chapter (Florida Atlantic University) seeing a need to establish a Zeta chapter in the Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay areas. The chapter was established with 22 sorors from the respective areas. The chapter members were installed by Soror Virginia T. Hansberry, Florida State Director.
