One More Mile

by: Joe Talhelm

One time while Jesus was teaching the people, of His day, He made this strange statement; "And if someone shall ask you to go one mile with them, go with them two miles, instead." This is a strange statement in our day and time, because we want to do only what is required and nothing more. In other words: "What is the least I have to do to get by?" I have even heard this statement, "If I can just get to heaven by the skin of my teeth, that would be okay with me." In other words: "What is the minimum?"

Let's just stop and think about the statement of Jesus for a minute. "If someone shall ask you to go one mile with them, go with them two miles, instead." It sounds like Jesus is saying that we are to live a life that gives more than is asked. Not a bad concept, is it?

If every student this coming school year gave more than the teacher asked for, what do you think would happen in our schools? What would happen to our students? What would happen to our teachers?

If every employee would give more than they were asked to, just what kind of company would theirs be? What kind of workers would they be? What kind of profits would the company see?

If every husband or wife gave more to their marriage than is asked for, just how many marriages would stay intact? How many people would live much more happier lives? How many families would be more stable than they are today?

If every person did more than they were asked to do where ever they are, what kind of country would we have? If every politician would give more than was asked of them, what kind of government would we have?

Quite a thought provoking statement of Jesus, don't you think? Why not try it - it could change your life.
