Having the Wile E. Coyote Syndrome

by Joe Talhelm

My favorite cartoon has always been the Roadrunner. I have enjoyed watching that cartoon for many years. What I like about the cartoon is that the Roadrunner's enemy "Wile E. Coyote" is always chasing the Roadrunner, trying to catch him. In the many years I have watched this cartoon, Wile E. Coyote has never caught the Roadrunner. Never. He uses tricks and traps to stop the Roadrunner, but he never getting what he wants.

I watch people every day always chasing things they can never catch. It's called the Wile E. Coyote syndrome. You see, we all want about the same things. Peace, safety for our families, happiness and the like. Others are chasing after a higher position, fame, more money, fast cars, relationships and on and on. Like Wile E. Coyote, they never catch what they are continually chasing after. Chasing after the things of the world will not bring satisfaction. Chasing the things of the world will bring heartache. Chasing after the things of the world will bring disillusion. So, what does the Bible say about this "Wile E. Coyote Syndrome"?

First Corinth. 12:31 says "But covet earnestly the best gifts and yet I shew unto you a more excellent way." The best gifts are the things of God. The more excellent way is love - true love. The kind of love that God showed when He sent His only Son to this world to die for each and every person, male & female, all colors, all nationalities. This is what we are urged to reach for in life. Love. God's love in our life. God's love in our family. God's love in all our relationships. This is what is worth chasing after. Love is worth much more than all the trivial things we chase after.

So, say good bye to the Wile E. Coyote Syndrome and say hello to the love that only God can give.
