The Baby Buns

A sad, sad story...

The story is, my parent's housemate likes to bring home wild animals...we've told him before not to, and to just leave them where they are, but he's still not listening. (I'm going to tell my parents that it's time that he moved out and found his own apartment.) Well, one tragic afternoon, him and his dog decided to chase rabbits. They chased the mommy bunny out onto a busy highway, and she was killed...the dog backtracked and found the bunny den, and proceeded to pull the babies out...

The housemate decided to bring them home...

Well....24+ hours later, I happen to come by my parent's house, and he shows me the bunnies, and tell me one has already died...so I immediately start in on fostermommymode, getting out the KRM (kitten replacement milk) and trying to get them warm. There was NO WAY I was leaving them with him, because he has no sense of foster parenting, and I was just plain pissed off at him, anyway....So I took them with me to my apartment, where I'm raising them with minimal human contact. I hope that when they get big enough to be on their own, I can reintroduce them to the wild at my old elementary school where there are minimal predators (thanks to housing and business development....ugh...), maximum playspace, and a large, thriving bunny population. I feel it is up to me, as a human, to raise them and then release them, because another despicable example from my species has taken away their poor mother...

Problem is....I'm allergic to bunnies, but I figure I can rough it for another few months.

The moral of this story is: Leave wild animals in the wild--respect them and their freedom, because they were born free, and we humans have no right to take that away from them.

Sadly, the smaller bun died on Saturday 24th, 2003...He just started convulsing as if he were having seizures, so we just held him and kept him warm, and he passed away an hour later......I was so sad, me and Brushie both cried huddled over the poor baby bun....We're going to bury him next to Bearbear under the arms of the Great Tree...He wasn't doing so well when we first received him, I think he was ill. He was always very sluggish and lethargic, no matter how much he ate.

The surviving bun is doing GREAT!!!! I've named him Oolong, in honour of the infamous Oolong who passed away earlier this year. It was my hope that both siblings would survive so that they would have a fighting chance among the rabbit colony...but I fear that this can no longer be achieved, and that without a buddy, he would be killed by the already established rabbits....so, I will be keeping him, I think...

Oolong adores being able to run about the apartment, I am being extremely patient in not approaching him, unless I have to usher him back into his bedroom (cage, which he is only in to sleep and eat, really). He's been becoming more curious towards us, and in the past two days, he has approached us and sniffed at our slippers. He no longer runs if we walk by, but stares up at us for a moment as we pass by, then goes about his business. He has only pooped on the carpet once, but that was because he had found some hay on the floor, so he was sitting down to eat a snackie. I'm trying to litterbox train him with a piepan and some litter, but we'll see how that goes. At least bun poo doesn't stick to things, and you don't have to Resolve carpet spray it and scrub it like you do with dog and cat poo!

The only thing which worries me, is that Oolong cannot speak, so if he gets stuck somewhere, I won't be able to hear him! Tonight, I thought he got lost in the playroom (the room I'm in now, with all our computers, boxes, equipment, and stuff), but I kept hearing something in/near the fridge........Turns out, he managed to sneak around the back of the fridge, and wound up in the DRIP TRAY!!!! I had noticed Brushie had moved the boxes which would have blocked the gaps between the fridge and the wall....but I didn't know the bun could sneak in! It'd be such a tight squeeze! He's so cute! I pulled the grate off, and he was staring out at me as if to say, "Hi! I'm just...uh....hanging out in here, yeah...I meant to be in here..." and he just sat there quietly while I pulled the tray out, and put it on the floor towards the hallway....Then he hopped off like nothing happened!

I don't usually take to buns, but this one....he's stealing my heart!

Oreo

This is Stephanie's Bun, Oreo, which she rescued from severe starvation, malnourishment, and neglect! I'm so proud of her for taking responsibility for this bun, and for being such a wonderful little girl!
