No Limit...today's number one selling rap label in the world. Shipping above gold and more per album, but how? Back in 1990, A young entrepreneur by the name of Percy 'Master P' Miller inherited $10,000 from his grandfather, who had recently won a lawsuit. With the money, Master P opened his own record store in Richmond, CA. He named the store No Limit Records, for his aggressive hunt towards success. Selling from underground albums to the Top Ten albums, Master P learned about the rap business through his customers, by what they wanted to hear and know. In '92, with the potential force, knowledge from local customers, and a business degree, Master P closed down the record store and started a new label in the rap game, under his former store No Limit Records. Starting out with only ten rappers on the label, Master P knew he would, in time, gain public knowledge of his label. He also hooked up with one of the Bay Area's biggest underground distributors, Saint Charles, owner of Solar Music Group, who also helped E-40, Too $hort and many other Bay Area rappers stardom. After that, No Limit needed a logo. Master P came up with No Limit's logo of a tank with two mobsters representing endless power. A tank rolls over anything, meaning there's no limit to what it can't take on, and the two mobsters have power, like a mob has the power to control anything. Putting out amateur underground albums such as Get Away Clean and Mama's BadBoy, Master P saw he would need more production to make his albums stand out.In '94, Master P's The Ghetto's Tryin To Kill Me set things off for No Limit,selling over 120,000 copies nationwide, with no radio play or televisionspots. Just selling as much as he did on that album, Master P knew there wasa market for his music. Being from the Bay Area, Master P rounded up thewest's best underground rappers and put them all on one compilation, formingthe West Coast Bad Boyz' first debut, Another Level of The Game. As time wentalong, No Limit started showing improvements with each album released. As '95came around, Master P dropped his second known album, 99 Ways To Die, sellingclose to 300,000 copies, which also gained No Limit's distribution deal withPriority Records. After small downfalls and disputes, Master P moved back down to New Orleans and established No Limit Records in Baton Rouge, signing local childhood friends and relatives. Since he's from the West and the South, and made a compilation for the west, P gathered up the South's finest underground rappers, and formed the Down South Hustlers with their debut album, Bouncin' N' Swangin.' Then in a year later, Master P released his third nationwide solo, Ice Cream Man, selling pure gold, as this started No Limit's long- running string of successful albums. As No Limit grew, Master P gradually formed one of the rap's hit production team, Beats By Tha Pound. Before Master P knew it, No Limit was blowing the rap scene with debut solo albums from Mia X, Tru (consisting of P, C-Murder, Silkk, Big Ed, and former mate King George), Kane & Abel, Silkk, Steady Mobb'n, soundtracks, and many more new artists. With the new coming artists, No Limit rappers were now nicknamed "Soldiers" because like soldiers, they do what ever it takes to make it. Then in early September of '97, Master P dropped his fourth solo album, Ghetto D, bringing No Limit's name into households across the world. No Limit has also been nicknamed "The Tank" from its logo, and the fact they feel they're unstoppable. No Limit has now expanded itself into books, sports agencies, clothes, and other accessories. No Limit also has a great influence on C- Murder's, Master P's brother, record label Tru Records. No Limit will keep its spot in the rap game for along time, but will never decrease.
