LOUISIANA TRADE TOKENS Louisiana trade tokens were exchanged for merchandise, goods or services. They first appeared in the late 1800's and used primarily into the 1940's & 50's. Many different and diverse sources issued tokens, including lumber, sugar plantation, and cotton plantation commissaries; general stores; bakeries; dairies; saloons and bars; restaurants; groceries; seafood processors; canneries; drug stores; tailors; billard, card and domino halls; military installations; ice houses; churches; and even houses of ill-repute. In 1982 a book on this subject titled LOUISIANA TRADE TOKENS by CRAWFORD, FARBER & TYLENDA was published. A second edition was published in 1996 by CRAWFORD & FARBER after many new tokens were discovered. The 1982 catalog is out of print but the second edition can be ordered from the "TOKEN AND MEDAL SOCIETY". e-mail Mark at mlighter@bellsouth.net.
