Super Calo

Super Calo is one of the most underrated wrestlers in WCW. He matches the size of Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko. However, Calo flies through the air with the ease of Rey Mysterio, Jr., Juventud Guerrera, or any of the lighter wrestlers. "The flying he does, especially for his size, is simply incredible," Guerrero said.

Calo's high-flying, high risk offense comes straight from the Mexican Lucha Libre style. It's a nonstop, fearless approach that has moved from south of the border and into America, courtesy of WCW.

"Depending totally on aerial attacks can be good and bad," Guerrero said. "Against some it'll really baffle them, and he'll have the edge. But against someone like Dean Malenko, he could get murdered with just an aerial offense. That's why I think Calo needs to learn more mat wrestling. And the good thing is, he wants to learn. That's the good thing about him.

"When Calo eventually perfects both forms (of offense), he really, really could be unstoppable."

Rey Mysterio, Jr., has been a tag team partner with Calo on numerous occasions. He also has faced him several times in WCW singles action.

"Super Calo was, in Mexico, one of those wrestlers who was good, but not really appreciated," said Mysterio. "He was a decent wrestler, but not a major superstar. When he joined WCW, a lot of the other (Mexican) wrestlers were kind of asking, Why him? Well, that's easy, he's very hard-working and has a great personality."

Mysterio said Calo's slow rise to stardom in WCW is due to the fact he was nervous upon arriving, "but I know he's overcome that now ... and expect nothing but greatness from him from here on out. He certainly has the potential for championship gold."

Calo's WCW career has been picking up lately. He no longer shows signs a severe elbow injury he suffered late last year (during a match with Mysterio, coincidentally).

Said Calo, "I'm very happy, very satisfied because I feel the people in WCW appreciate my work. I feel I have really bettered myself as a wrestler over the past few months."

Calo's hip-hop costume stems from his love of music and his association with a Mexican pop act which shares his name. He is a rap afficionado who always can be spotted with headphones and the latest CDs. Among his favorites: Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dog.

"The youth who are watching WCW ... I feel I can identify with them very well," Calo said. "There's a whole segment of America who listen to the same music I do, wear the same clothing. So, yeah, I'm appealing to them. Those are (the fans) who I'm trying to attract."

"I will do whatever necessary to win a match," said Calo, whose "special move" as he calls it starts when he sits his opponent on a turnbuckle. He then goes up on the top rope, delivers an inverted head-scissors, dragging his opponent to the mat.

"I try to be creative every time I am in the ring, do something new, something the fans have never seen."

Calo's high-flying tactics have already garnered him the attention and respect of the biggest names in WCW.

"Super Calo has a great attitude. He's hungry and wants to win. He's got a never-say-die attitude and a lot of athleticism; it just needs to be focused," said Eddie Guerrero. "In time, I'm confident Super Calo will be a major force in this sport."
