Our Roop reunion in Waterloo, IA, at the end of June, 2004, was a wonderful event. One of our projects was to privately publish Fredrick Roop and Elizabeth Abbott of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania - Descendants and Allied Families
Our second Roop reunion in June 2006 was held in Adams Co, IN. The book mentioned above is sold out and we doubled the size of the book, making it impractical to reprint. 1. Fredrick M? ROOP, Sr. (1765, PA-26 Feb 1831, Union Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA)
m. c1791, Elizabeth ABBOTT (1773, ?Eng-28 Aug 1841, Seneca Co, OH) possible daughter of William Abbott who had a son named Levi. Elizabeth is buried in White Chapel/United Brethren Cem, Melmore, Eden Twp, Seneca Co, OH, near her daughter Eva Roop Shultz West.
Fredrick RAPE first appears in the 1790 census of Hopewell (now Union) Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA, as a young man living alone. The family of William ABBIT is living nearby with 2 boys and 4 girls. In the 1800 census, Frederic ROPE and Elizabeth have five young children. Frederick RUPE/Roop owned 300 acres of land in Huntingdon Co, PA, which was surveyed on 2 Jan 1795. The 1823 tax list gives his occupation as wheelwright. From the Union Twp tax lists, Fredrick is taxed until 1831, when Heirs of Fredrick are taxed until 1836, then they are crossed off the tax lists. Most of the sons and Elizabeth appear on the 1840 census of Willshire Twp., Van Wert Co, OH.

According to the PA Archives, Third Series, Vol. XXV, 1898
Jacob RUP had 400 acres in Huntingdon Co. surveyed in 1793, Isaac, Jacob, James, John, Richard, Robert, Simon, Thomas and William ROOP each had 400 acres surveyed in 1794. How are these men connected to Frederick??
In the PA Archives, Sixth Series, Vol. III, 1907, Fredrick ROPE is listed as a person subject to militia duty from Huntingdon Co; Capt. Dean and Capt. Jaret's Co. Any further information would be greatly appreciated!

Tax lists proving Fredrick was in Union Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA, leads to the conclusion that all children were born in that area.
Letter from Mrs. Walter A. Gehres to HCHS (28 Feb 1979)
"Frederick Roup lived on 300 acres of land one and half miles from Tatam Gap in Todd Twp, bordering August Hornick/Hornack and James Entricken. He was in the 1788 Militia and married 1790-91. May be buried in "Little Valley" or the cemetary on Tatum Run in Todd Twp. ...Parents may be Jacob and Catherine Roop/Rupe who had land in Huntingdon Co betw. 1794-1797."
Huntingdon Co, PA Orphans Court Docket D, File U, #214, p. 182 contains a petition from Frederick RUPE's son, Joseph RUPE, dated 17 Nov 1834, which names all thirteen children and includes the husbands of the daughters. Most such petitions list the children in birth order, so DOBs have been estimated based on that listing unless other information gives a more exact date.

Jacob leaves the Huntingdon Co. tax lists in 1818 and returns in 1820. In 1822, he is listed a a single freeman, so he married sometime after that. Nancy Lewis and her brother Nathaniel were raised on a VA plantation. According to one source, Jacob drowned in 1846. Nancy and six of her children appear on the 1850 census of St. Mary's Twp, Adams Co, IN taken on 20 Nov 1850.

Many thanks to Melba Brown of Detroit, MI, for the information on the Elder family. Samuel was the son of William ELDER (6 Feb 1764-late Dec 1844, Huntingdon Co, PA) and either Sarah ??? or Mary FAY. His siblings were John (1787-1847) m. 1812, Mary KEITH; Eli/Elem and Sarah m. Frederick HEATER. William Elder's parents were George ELDER (d. 1799) and Sarah VOGAN of Huntingdon Co, PA. George was a RWP who had seven children: William, John (b. 1766), Robert (b. 1768), Margaret (c1773-1777), Isabelle and another Margaret (b. aft. 1773). George and Sarah Elder are buried in the Piney Creek Cem, near Cherry Town, Huntingdon Co, PA.

In 1834, Joseph was living in Huntingdon Co, PA. In 1837, the newlyweds bought 40 acres of land in Seneca Co, OH. In 1844, they bought 76.4 acres in Van Wert Co, OH. Couple were living in Adams Co, IN by 1850 census. Joseph's obit says he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for over 40 years. Elizabeth's funeral services were conducted by a minister of the United Brethren Church. Both are buried in Pleasant Mills, Adams Co, IN.
