MY TITANIC OBSESSION

I first attempted to see James Cameron's movie Titanic in December of 1997. I did not know how big the movie was and I just thought I would go and check out the special effects because the commercials looked cool. Naturally, when I arrived at the theater five minutes before the movie was to start, they were sold out so my friend Christie and I went to see another movie. On Saturday January 24, 1998 I watched the Oprah show on Titanic (I had taped it earlier in the week). I was so impressed with the effort that went into making the movie as authentic as possible. I was also impressed by Oprah saying that you shouldn't be an American if you didn't go see this movie. I kept thinking something this authentic needs to be seen. Another friend had seen it and was very impressed so I asked her when would be a good time to get there to buy a ticket - she said 6 pm and the movie would start at 8 pm. So Christie and I were at the theater for 5:30 pm but they said come back at 6 pm when they open the box office. When we returned at 6 they were sold out! We were some unhappy campers at that point! But Christie went and asked the manager about it and

he let us buy two tickets for the 8 pm showing. He said to arrive at 7 though if we wanted a seat - trust me - we were there on time! Finally, after all that we were ready! I really didn't know much about the story of Jack and Rose but of course, I knew the ship was going to sink. I thought I pretty much knew what to expect but boy was I WRONG! The entire movie I was on the edge of my seat. I never thought about having to go to the bathroom (something I had been worried about with a movie that is 3 hours and 14 minutes long) and I was talking to the characters the whole time. I called Cal a few choice words myself! I didn't know who might die or who might live but I was sure hoping for a happy ending. From the iceberg on, I was in tears but I still held out hope for a happy ending for Jack and Rose. That hope lasted until I heard Jack say, "Rose, you are going to make it ...". When I heard that "you", I thought my heart would just break into a million pieces. I have never cried so much over a movie or story before. When we left the theater, Christie and I cried the whole way home and could not stop talking about how tragic the whole thing was. We were very happy to see our husbands and tell them we were glad to have them in our lives. A movie like Titanic makes you appreciate everything you have because it may be gone before you know it. I wanted to "make it count". One other thing we were both sure of was that we could never see that movie again because it was too sad.  FAMOUS LAST WORDS!

By the next day (after a night of dreaming about Titanic and half a day of being sad) I was starting to have withdrawals. I really wanted to see it again. Christie thought I was crazy but I could not stop talking about it. I told everyone at work that they HAD to see this movie and started making arrangements to go again. The rest is history:
  • I have gone to see the movie with anyone I could talk into going and have even learned to go to a movie by myself {and I enjoyed myself - thank you very much : - )} I have seen Titanic a total of 19 times. People may say that doesn't seem very obsessed but I am funny about how I watch the movie - the room has to be dark, with the surround sound on and no possibility of any interruptions and I don't have that setting very often. I saw Titanic 12 times in the theater. I have seen Titanic 6 times on video: 5 times - Letterbox (Widescreen) version and 1 time - Pan and Scan version and 1 time on HBO.
  • I have started a vast collection of Titanic memorabilia.
  • I have spend countless hours on the Internet (actually learned how to use the Internet for the express purpose of hunting Titanic information) and I purchased the domain name www.titanicobsessed.com and had a great time making this web site to share my fascination with Titanic with anyone who is interested.

  • Bought and read a million books, magazines, and articles to try and satisfy my vast thirst for Titanic information.
  • I joined some wonderful mailing groups at Onelist.com on the topic of Titanic and discovered there are some wonderful people out there who are just as crazy about Titanic as I am. I just recently made my own mailing list which is a Titanic Trivia Game which I hope you will join. Click to subscribe to TitanicTrivia@onelist.com .
  • I joined The Titanic Historical Society.
  • I saw Titanic the Exhibition by RMS Titanic, Inc. at the World Trade Center in Boston.
  • I saw Titanica (a documentary) at the IMAX theater in Boston.
  • I traveled 2000 miles in 3 days through 7 states to see memorablia exhibitions from the movie.

That is the beginning of MY continuing obsession with Titanic (all aspects - movie and history). I hope I didn't bore you! You can go to Kate Winslet's Titanic Diary to learn about HER experiernce with Titanic.
