When you have all the colors of the rainbow available,
why choose to use only black and white and shades of gray? Because
the sparsity of color can give great impact. Because you can concentrate
on other subjects like composition, form, contrast, etc., thereby giving
a different kind of artistic interpretation. It can be a spiritual
thing, like the concept of balance. Or it may be a simple case of
economics or ease of reproduction.
All of these reasons are valid. I think
my black and white work is valid as well. In fact, one of my traveling
shows features only black and white pieces. I call it "Light and
Shadow: the yin and yang of art".
