Silliman Sayings

Submitted by Charlotte

We had a nice trip to San Francisco for the National Convention, in September, until the attack happened on our country. Our hotel was one that received a bomb threat and had to be evacuated. Running down 14 floors gives you a new lease on life. It only takes a second to change your life forever, I’m learning that lesson more and more lately. With all air traffic grounded, we ended up having to spend three extra days because we couldn't get a flight out but we finally made it home, safe and sound, Thank God! San Francisco is really a different kind of place. The weather is great and plenty of things to see. We've been home a month and it seems forever ago.

Two weekends ago we went to Rough River to do a little crappie fishing and I came down with hives so bad we had to make a midnight run to Hardinsburg hospital for a couple of steroid shots. I didn’t know why I had broken out. I wasn’t sure if I had gotten into something, or if I was having some kind of allergic reaction to something I’d eaten or my medicine, but, after my shots I thought I was healed. The next day I became one giant hive, (Note the illustration!). We then packed up and came home. Another trip to Immediate Care for more shots and it turns out that I was allergic to my blood pressure medicine. I'm just about good as new. Sill fished in a bass tournament this past weekend and I decided to do a little house cleaning. In removing a light fixture to clean it, it slipped and came back and hit me in the nose. I now have five stitches in my nose. Other than that I'm doing fine. My therapy is going great. I can now eat with my right hand again after six months. I went to my plastic surgeon on Friday and they are going to do surgery to close up the hole in my arm on November.19th at Jewish Hospital. He is also going to be able to fix my carpal tunnel syndrome while he’s in there. Yeah!

Ben didn't have too much news to report this month, only that his car keeps getting hit outside of his apartment because he has to park in the street and it is really starting to tick him off. His good friend Doug Shutte whom I know a few of you know, lost his dad to a heart attack a couple of weeks ago. On a happier note his other buddy Scot Atkinsin has appeared as an extra on several episodes of J.A.G. Watch for him, he’s gonna be a SUPERSTAR!!!!

Rothgerber Report

Submitted by Lois

With all that has happened in the United States and globally, what I have to report seems insignificant and mundane but here goes...

We had a very enjoyable visit with Jeremy and his brothers last weekend. All of us went to the Saint James Art Fair Saturday morning. It was enjoyable until we became so squished that it was near impossible to see the booths. The rest of the weekend was uneventful, just relaxing and visiting. Monday we did manage to squeeze in Grandma Day before Jeremy had to leave. He left at 6 o'clock that evening to go back to D.C. He arrived in the Gambia last Thursday evening and has already started working.

Nick is working in Evansville Indiana at a GE plastics plant. He has been in safety training for a week but hopes to start Monday Oct. 15 in the plant. The job is supposed to be 6-10's or 7-10's and last 2-3 months. I guess we won't see him for a few months. Shanna remains home and continues to work while he is out of town.

James continues to work at Meijers but has had his hours cut. He is taking in all the baseball play-offs with his eye looking forward to basketball. GO BIG BLUE!

Dave is working hard to get up all those fall leaves. This fall, he hopes to beat last year’s record of 36 truckloads collected and dumped. GO DAVE GO!

I finished my golf league in second place this season. I'm still playing when I get a chance, until cold weather comes to stay. Hope everyone has a safe month. God Bless Our Great Family!

We spent quick 3 days in Las Vegas (Oct.4-6) so I could play in two-day golf scramble through the Tropicana Hotel. The Golf Gods shined upon me! On day one I was on the second place team (out of 24 teams) while in the second days round my team placed third.

The Tropicana treated us like kings. Mary spent the time I was golfing researching the new machines at different hotels. Tough work, but she is always up to a challenge!!!

By the time you read this we would have already been to hear Willie Nelson in concert at Belterra Casino with Jennifer’s mom and dad, Jean and Dan Vogt. Let you know how good he was in the next newsletter. Dave and Lois will be with us Oct. 11th at Caesar’s for a Bob Newhart concert. Lois has been assigned to give the family review on that one.

Steve and Debbie Neal are coming in for a visit the weekend of Nov.17th and we plan on going to the track that Saturday.

We will be closing the trailer up on Oct. 20th to finalize another year at Rough River. Maybe next year the Corp of Engineers will have the lake level figured out. This was the first year in the past 32 that I’ve been coming to Fentress Lookout that I did not go swimming. Mary got in the water twice.

It's been a pretty slow couple of months for us. We went to South Carolina for softball, attended weddings for our friends Dan & Rachel and my brother, and now John is getting prepped for the baseball playoffs. Softball is winding down for John, although he is in a couple of fall leagues.

We are very excited to start work on finishing our basement. We are just now roughing out the plans so we know we have a lot of work ahead of us. Still, it is something to look forward to.

I am about to start a new job at work and will have more details on that next month. That's about it for us. Hope you all have a great month!

Scott Stuff

There’s not much going on at the Scott’s house this month. Mickey is still running in his Cross County Meets and did get 6th place in the Shelby County Meet and received a medal. Way to go Mickey!!

Sammy has been deer hunting a few times already. He has seen deer but they have not been close enough to get a shot at them.

Sammy was at Rough River for a fishing tournament the weekend of October 13th and 14th. Sammy reported that it rained all weekend and caused the river to come up to summer pool stage. A little late now, they start letting the water out on the 15th of October.

As for me, I’m still sewing a lot and Stephanie is embroidering a lot. Stephanie has more on that in her newsletter.

I had a wonderful Birthday. I was very blessed. They were downsizing at work and the woman I work with was planning on retiring in a couple of years, so thankfully, she decided that she would just go ahead and retire out now, which means luckily, I still have a job. Her last day is Dec. 14th, so now it is just me in the Real Estate Department with my two bosses.

Bud gave me diamond earrings for my Birthday. That was a big surprise. The boys gave me candles and Michelle gave me an outfit. My friend Mary and her sister sent me muffins and her mom and other sister sent me a plant. They knew I was having a hard time about work and the downsizing

Bud has been golfing and getting some very good scores. Matt and Michelle are both doing very well in school. Matt has a 3.0 Grade Point Average and Michelle has a 3.5 and has made the Honor Roll again! She also has her driver’s license now and loves every minute of it.

Richardson Ramblings

Busy, Busy, Busy at the Richardson household! As Aunt Ginny said, we’ve been very busy sewing. In the last newsletter we were just starting out and exploring our options. We were fired up about getting out there and making some money, however, after meeting with our Business Consultant (Aunt Evelyn, who was extremely helpful and very generous with her time), we decided that we don’t really want to make this a full time job. We don’t mind a steady flow of work, but we can’t, at this point put in 40 or more hours a week. As busy as we’ve been lately though, it feels like we’re putting in 80 hours a week. We have a job with PRP National Bank and the sales at Creations, where we have our merchandise, have really taken off. Aunt Ginny has been selling personalized baby blankets like crazy. My neighborhood just had their annual fall yard sale and we put a lot of our stuff out. We had a great day, passed out a lot of business cards, and already have orders coming in. We plan on having a booth at the Seneca High School Bazaar on Nov. 3rd. Wish us luck!

Okay, enough about that. My mommy’s group at church has started up again for the winter months, Yeah! I arranged to have a guy that works with Jeff to come to next months meeting and teach us self-defense, pretty excited about that.

I am on my neighborhood board and a few of us formed a committee to plan our annual neighborhood block party, which is usually pretty lame. It was this past weekend, and it was wonderful. Big fun was had by all, it was by far the best picnic we’ve had since we’ve been here.

Jeff killed off our whole lawn and power seeded it early fall. It has come up beautifully, it looks like a golf course. He’s so proud. Aunt Ginny and Uncle Sammy so kindly gave our dog an adoptive home till a good fill of grass came up in the back yard. Thank you guys soooo much!

Sam is totally digging school, and he’s just like a little sponge soaking up everything they teach him. He really enjoys it. We went to his first parent teacher conference and the teacher said that she really enjoys Sam and he cracks her up everyday.

My baby girl just turned 2 years old. I can’t believe it. She had a wonderful birthday, and was the queen of her little party, singing and blowing out her candles, she had a great day.

I swear that child will be the death of me, her latest escapade, to add to her ever growing list of escapades, was a lipstick assault on my living room chair, my mostly white chair, with a mostly dark shade of lipstick. I’m still trying to get the stain out. She’s killing me, but it’s all worth it, Right…Right? Oh, I wouldn’t trade her for anything, I might sell her, but definitely not trade, not yet anyway. Love to all!

Julia lost her 2nd tooth at our house last weekend. It now matches the other empty space next to it. It was a traumatizing event but we got through it. The tooth fairy was good to her.

Rust has big news! After 11 ½ years he got himself a new car. A very sharp, laser-red, Ford Mustang. He loves it. I must admit he looks good in it.

I just walked in the Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer this past Saturday. Luckily the rain held off and it ended up being a nice day. It was a good three-mile walk for a good cause.

As all of you know I started Weight Watchers after Labor Day. So far I’ve dropped 17 lbs. Yeah for me!!

Finally we are on-line and have a functioning computer. Please E-me. I’ve been longing for E’s forever. I feel I’ve been missing out. The family E address is jjjdowell@earthlink.net. It stands for what else but James, Jackie and Julia. Thanks all!

Stuecker Say-So

Alyssa is following in her father’s footsteps and recently joined a Saturday morning bowling league. Her team was originally called “The HATs” for Haley, Alyssa and Tiffany but they are thinking of changing it again. She’s doing a terrific job thanks to some wonderful coaching by her father. Her average has already gone up over 10 pins since she started.

Gus is having a ball living back up in New Washington. This is his favorite time of the year as there is a ton of farm work to be done with the harvesting a preparing the fields for winter. He is spending all his free time on a tractor and loving every minute of it.

Mom and Dad just returned from their annual fall camping trip. They stayed close to home this year and only made to different stops all within Kentucky. They said the weather was terrific and the changing leaves were gorgeous. They also got to do a lot of golfing while they were gone. They’re favorite golf course was in Paintsville, Kentucky. They actually golfed on top of a mountain! The view was spectacular and was made even more so by the fall colors.

Matt and I are getting settled into our new house. We just love it!! We’ve only been here about four weeks but it already feels like home. We’ve been doing a lot of painting and Matt has had a million little odd jobs to do. Everything from installing the new satellite dish to installing our microwave and the new shower door.

As for me, I was in charge of the wallpapering which was a total nightmare. My mom was gracious enough to come and assist me but it was quickly determined that I don’t have the patience for the job. The room would still be half wallpapered it wasn’t for Mom. Thanks Mom! You’re the best!!

That leaves only the very best part of our new home: Alyssa’s mural. My Dad came and painted a beautiful mural on the back wall of Alyssa’s room. It’s a beautiful landscape with a fabulous rainbow. Alyssa just loves it. At night, standing in our driveway with the lights on in Alyssa’s room and the blinds up, when you look through her window it seems like you could go right through the window and stand under the tree it’s so real. Thanks Dad, you did great!!
