WHAT IS KEY CLUB?

Key Club is the Largest Service organisation of its kind anywhere in the World........and guess what? It is run by high school students just like you.

But where did it all begin?

In the early 1920s the  need for the establishment of a High School organisation to help direct young men towards a more meaningful way of life was noted. By 1924, major work had been undertaken by the Kiwanis Club of Sacramento to establish a service club and in May 1925, the first Key Club was started at the Sacramento High School in California. The club held weekly meetings, where Kiwanians came to speak with the group on vocations and other topics of interest. In a short time, the club developed into an organisation geared towards social and service activities.

Soon other Kiwanis Clubs became interested in the idea and sponsored similar groups in other schools, whose educators and administrators were more than receptive to the undertakings of this group of professional individuals. By 1939, there were so many clubs in Florida, that a decision was taken to unite all the various high school groups and a convention was held to discuss ideas. Thus the first "District" was organised, officers were elected and decisions were taken which increased the number of clubs. It was not until 1946, when the International Constitution and Bylaws were adopted, that the Florida State Association became the first District of Key Club.

Since that time in 1925, Key Club grew rapidly and expanded throughout North America and the Caribbean. Here, students are trained according to the Aims and Objects of Key Club International and Pledge to offer unwavering support to service, in support of their Motto

In 1971 the first Key Club in Jamaica was started at the Kingston College and on September 30th, 1980, the Mighty St. Andrew High School Key Club was chartered. By 1985 the Jamaica District of Clubs was chartered and today, over seventy clubs are in existence within six divisions, comprising over 1,600 Key Clubbers.
