Functions of Cellular Structures
Found
in all eukariotic (cells with a nucleus and organelles) cells:
cell
membrane-controls
what enters and leaves the cell; membrane that surrounds the cell
cytoplasm-fluid found inside the
cell; organelles are found suspended in the cytoplasm
nucleus-control center of
cell; where DNA is found
Found
in both plant and animal cells:
ribosomes-structure that build
proteins
endoplasmic
reticulum-modifies
proteins; assembles parts of cell membrane
golgi
apparatus-packages
proteins to be exported out of the cell
vacuoles-structures for storage or transport; in plant cells,
the vacuole also serves to support the plant
mitochondria-convert glucose into a
usable energy form (know as ATP)
cytoskeleton-internal support structures
make of protein
Found
only in plant cells:
chloroplasts-site of photosynthesis, in
which the energy of sunlight is absorbed to build glucose
Found
only in animal cells:
lysosomes-site of waste disposal
