More than you'd ever want to know about me...
Update: Mom was misquoted. She thinks the REST of the family needs to be more eccentric. In her opinion, I'm shouldering far too much of the load.
Well, well, well, you STILL want to know more about me...as if you didn't get a clue from my eclectic collection of links and interests...
OK, then. I was born into a circus family 39 years ago in Louisville, KY. My dad recently retired from Ford Motor Company, where he worked in the Special Order Design Department of the Kentucky Heavy Truck Plant. My mom used to work in an insurance office, but quit to stay home when I was born. I have a sister who is 36 and a brother who is 6 (an amusing little story behind this...)
I've been "off-beat" (the PC term for "weird") for probably all of my life. It may be genetic; my sister seems to also have a bizarre thought process. I'm the type of person who breezes through algebra because it makes perfect sense, yet has to do simple addition on her fingers. You probably went to school with someone like me, and hated him/her.
A real conversation:
Dad: What are you doing? (I got asked that a LOT.)
Me: Umm...Putting the cap back on the Coke bottle? (Uncertainty in my voice; it could well be a trick question.)
Dad: Wouldn't it be easier to hold the bottle still and screw the cap ON, instead of holding the cap still and screwing the bottle IN?
Me: No.
Being ambidexterous, I have no concept of "left" and "right;" this may explain why I do so many things backwards. I almost didn't learn how to drive; driving instuctors tend to get nervous when you can't follow directions like "Turn left." (Except in Ohio, where I used to live--if you've ever driven here, you'll know what I mean. I got rear-ended 3 times in 2 years.)
Now to answer those FAQs: Yes, my nose is really pierced, that's not a clip-on in my picture. Yes, 39 IS awfully old to have a nose ring. Yes, it hurt, but I got an incredible endorphin rush. Yes, I really did teach at my church (why does this surprise so many people?)
I love UK basketball; I try to follow the 'Cats on TV/radio, but Cincy's JP stations aren't the major networks (which I get on satellite). Still a rabid fan after all these years; even the kids are getting into it (we start 'em young in Kentucky!) Looking for yet another National Championship...and believe me, we'll get it. Soon.
My other typically Kentuckian passion is Throughbred racing. I saw a trip to the race track as an educational exercise in math--mostly figuring odds and counting the money I made. I was good. REALLY good. (Another FAQ answer: Yes, it IS illegal for a 12-year-old to bet. And she should be in school anyway. So go ahead and deny a child at a difficult and tender age the only one true happiness she knows in life. Go ahead, see how she turns out when she grows up. Bet she gets her nose pierced.)
I'm also into health/environmental/vegetarian issues. Being an Animal Science major, I saw for myself the shameful way farm animals are treated. I'm not gonna get self-righteous about it; I'm just telling you that I can't eat animal products after what I've seen.
I love music; my taste is pretty eclectic, though. Classical, Jethro Tull, old Motown, the Beatles, Jerry Lee Lewis...these are my favorites, but I can put up with (almost) anything. I also love to read, but I don't get much time when the kids are home.
Jobs I've had: Receptionist/file clerk for an optometrist; groom at several different farms (Saddlebreds, Morgans, and Arabians); stripper (Not what you're thinking. Jeez.); kennelgirl; veterinary receptionist/assistant/technician; computer lab assistant; tutor; part-time college instructor; and now, assistant data manager.
UPDATE! Jeez, do you all really read this stuff? *sigh*...There is so much new stuff going on right now it's hard to know where to start. We finally moved to a new house in December, but my husband died in March, so now I'm getting a taste of the single parenting thing. I'm also taking violin lessons and attending a grief support group. It's getting better, one day at a time. The support of my family and friends--and the prayers and kind wishes of all of you who already knew about this--are what's kept me sane and relatively functional. I can't think of anything else that anyone could possibly want to know about me. I do have some great true stories from my warped childhood; unfortunately, the server I had those pages on has dumped them. I'll re-post sometime when I get a chance, for those of you who are curious as to why the Avon lady doesn't visit my mom anymore...or why I am no longer welcome at a certain McDonald's...or if you just want to learn how to leave a tip for the waiter in an upside-down glass of water.
