Wonderful Season
Despite Merrie's being so busy with the show season (*HINT HINT*, girlfriend), we've managed to get a fairly good racing season going as well. Hunter is simply awesome, she's still never been off the boards, and is racking up graded stakes victories like there's no tomorrow.

One in a Million has decided to become a flat-racing operation only, and we'll be selling off all our current 'chasers when we find a good auction. We'll then have more room to re-evalute some of our flat racers, possibly starting them over jumps, to be sold at a later date. I'm worried about poor Bunny though--she pretty much sucks on the flat, but at barely 15 hands, I doubt steeplechasing is in her future.

Our 2-year-olds aren't showing much promise, only one (Mambo Rose, aka "Bo") has even so much as brought home a piddly paycheck. I guess the rough crop of freshmen this year is the balance for last year's stars--Sword, Blue, and Hunter. Got my fingers crossed that Hunter stays healthy; she's our only source of income right now :-P

A New Season
Woo hoo, One in a Million Stables is back for the 2004 season! We've got 8 entries for Jan. 26, including our "Big Three" 2-year-olds from last season, all making their sophomore debuts: Sword, Blue, and the awesome Hunter.

Bunny and Windy make their first starts as 3-year-olds as well--here's hoping some rest and maturity has done them both some good. Bunny, if you remember, was a preemie born when her mama got loose for several days, so the tiny little girl has been babied and--dare I say it?--spoiled. Windy might make the jump (no pun intended) to steeplechasing this season.

Home Again--For Now!
Sword, Queenie, Rosie, Blue, and Hunter all traveled well, and looked fit and rested when we arrived home yesterday. We'll hardly be settled in again before I take the babies (Sword, Blue, and Hunter) back on the road to the Fall Futurity in Washington. Merrie was going to go, but she has a Reiki class or something that weekend.

All of our horses will probably have just one more race this season (with the possible exception of Bunny; our favorite little preemie was just too tiny to compete this year. The vet says she'll be lucky to make 15 hands!). Everyone gets this weekend off, including me. After the Futurity, I'll take another string to Woodbine for the month, then HOME TO KENTUCKY for the rest of the season!

Melbourne Cup
Overall, yesterday was a very good day for One in a Million Stables. Merrie stayed behind to tend to the rest of the herd, but she was thrilled to pieces with the results. Sword was a "bridesmaid" again in the g.III Juvie, his 5th 2nd-place finish in 6 races. Hunter was 3rd in an outstanding field of talent in the g.III Fillies' Juvie. Our other 2-y-o, Blue, was outclassed (my fault entirely for entering him) and only managed a 6th-place finish in the g.II Outback Promise.

Three-year-old Queenie finished an impressive 2nd in the g.I Doncaster, better than I had expected! Sword's half-sister, Rosie, was 5th in the g.I Caufield--again, I had hesitated to enter her, but she looked awesome in her last race...

The gang will get to rest through Wednesday, then on the plane back to the states on Thursday morning.
