I'm still working on this veggie website. The best I can hope to do at this time is provide some basic information, a few recipes (I'm not much of a cook, though), and provide a place where newbies can pick up advice from those of us who have had lots more experience. I'm also including a lot of links to sites where you can get more in-depth info than I have the time for. The purpose of this site isn't to convert people, but rather to provide support to those who are already vegetarians and info to those who are just getting started--or are just curious.
I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but I've been a vegetarian for half of my life and therefore have a LOT of practical experience. In a society where a "balanced meal" is fries with your burger, it's often discouraging for vegetarians trying to make healthy food choices. Unless you like those horrid iceberg lettuce salads...*grin*

Please help me get started...I need your input as to what kind of information you want to see here. I especially need you all to send in your best veggie recipes; I really don't cook very much for myself. I'm also looking for your veggie stories--why you became a vegetarian (or why you're interested in becoming one). If you have any tips for eating out, quick meals, or advice on any aspect of vegetarianism, or if you have questions on vegetarianism, please post on my Vegetarian Exchange Board.
Health--It's no secret that the saturated
fat and concentrated protein in meat and other animal-source foods are
hard on your heart, arteries, and kidneys, and may contribute to certain
cancers.
Environmental concerns--Food animal production
requires a LOT of space, and produces a LOT of waste.
Animal welfare issues--Ever been to a slaughterhouse?
Ever seen how farm animals are raised?
Religious/spiritual reasons--Vegetarianism
is encouraged (to some degree or another) by Hindus, Jains, Buddhists,
Jews, Seventh Day Adventists, and more. Some people who don't belong to
these or any other organized religion just feel that is is morally/spiritually
wrong to kill animals for food.
For me? All of the above...
Ovo-lacto: eats no meat, poultry, or seafood,
but will eat eggs and dairy products. The most common type of vegetarianism;
and probably the easiest to convert to if you're just starting out.
Lacto: eats no meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs,
but will eat dairy.
Vegan: eats no meat, poultry, seafood, eggs,
dairy products, and most don't eat honey, either.
Others: There are many who follow offshoots
of vegetarianism, such as raw/living
foodists and fruitarians.
Technically, you're a vegetarian if you don't eat any meat, poultry, or seafood. But a lot of vegetarians also don't eat foods made from animal by-products, such as gelatin or cheese made with rennet. There is no "right" or "wrong" type of vegetarianism; even if you're just eating less meat, you're doing the environment, your body, and the animals a favor!
