Hemphills' Site

Hundreds of miners have died in Letcher County since coal mining began here in the late 1800's. Citizens of Letcher County plan to erect a memorial to thos who have lost their lives digging coal. A List of mine fatalities is being compiled. Local newspapers in Letcher County have printed a limited list of names and other names can be submitted to Starla Hampton at (606)855-4191. The committee expects the memorial to cost about $15,000, not including brick pavers around the site. The memorial itself will consist of four engraved stones. Each will be four to five feet tall and approximately 24 inches wide. They will be arranged in a semi-circle at the site which will also be landscaped. The memorial was designed by Dianna Holbrook, a local artist from Payne Gap, Ky. The goal has been set to have the memorial finished in time for the annual hemphll Reunion, which is held each year on labor day weekend. The project needs your help. The only way it can be completed is to receive enough generous donations to finish the tribute to so many miners that have given the ultimate while trying o supporttheir families in the coal mines. To make a donation or submit names to the list you may also contact Ross Fleming, Chairman, at (606)855-0086.
