Javier Bassi

Life of Javier Bassi

Javier Bassi was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1964. He began to study drawing in 1976 with Pierre Fossey. In 1984, Javier entered the factory of Pepe Mounts, which was located in the House of the Culture of the Prado. The next year he entered in the Faculty of Architecture. Later he found the "Group Cyclop" with Diego Focaccio and Jose Luis Parodi. He traveled to Mexico, the United States, Europe, and North Africa in 1993. He obtained a scholarship in New York and Boston in the same year. In 1995, he was invited to a workshop with Rubens Gerchman, a fellow artist. After living in Nantes, France, Javier went back to New York and made a series of paintings and objects in the Jose Moral Studio, which was located in Manhattan. Right now, Javier Bassi moved back to his home in Montevideo and is still working as an artist.

Style of Painting

Javier Bassi can express himself through his paintings and sculptures. He may use masks in his paintings because they hide the realities. Through his artwork he tries to escape from "normal" art and make his paintings seem primitive and mythical. It is said that his artwork reflects the urge to the western parameters. Bassi uses black the most out of any other color to express this urge. Some of the other colors he uses are white, gray, ocher, and green. He achieves these colors through mixing and washing the color black. Throughout his art there are light and dark areas to show his artwork is both dual and complex. Much of his artwork is figurative and abstract.
