Notes for KING OF ENGLAND WILLIAM I "THE CONQUEROR" DE NORMANDY:

[horrocks[1].FTW]

For hundreds of years before 1066, England had been ruled b y Anglo-Saxon kings.  When Edward "the Confessor" died in 1 066, William of Normandy saw his chance for a successful in vation of England.  He built a fleet, attracted many knight s, and obtained the pope's blessing.  He gained victory a t the Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England o n Christmas of 1066, at Westminster by Aldred, Archbishop o f York. During the next few years, William presided ove r a gradual redistribution of land in England.  Saxon rebel lions led to the confiscation of lands, which the Norman Ba rons received.  As a result of this Norman invasion, the En glish people today are of both Norman and Anglo-Saxon extra ction. He was 59 when he died. His horse had shied, throwni g his fat belly into the pommel of his saddle, thus rupturi ng his bowels.

William I, the Conqueror.  Illegitmate son of Robert, Duk e of Normandy.  When he was a small boy, his father died an d he was acknowledged his successor by the Norman barons .  The next 12 years were a period of anarchy, but in 1240 , with the help of Henry I of France, he stamped out a seri ous rising and later recovered the fortress of Alencon fro m Geoffrey Martel, Count of Anjou. Fearing the close connec tion of Normandy with Flanders, Henry I joined Geoffrey t o invade Normandy, but was twice defeated, and William adde d to his power by annexing Mayenne and Maine. In 1065 Edwar d the Confessor, King of England, died and William claime d the succession.  He invaded England and on October 14, 10 66, defeated Harold at the battle of Senlac or Hastings.  H e was crowned King of England on Christmas Day at Westminst er Abbey.  For the next five years he continued military op erations, reducing the south and west, and in 1070 complete d the conquest by a march to Chester.  To reward his follow ers, he redistributed land taken from its earlier owners, b ut in granting it each of his barons received portions in s everal counties.  His administration was based on Norman fe udalism, the barons having close personal relations with th e King.  At the same time the old courts of shire and hundr ed were preserved, as well as the system of governing throu gh sheriffs.  Although his heavy taxation caused complaints , he won th respect of his English subjects, who regarded h im as their protector agianst feudal oppression on accoun t of his regard for legal forms and his confirmation of th e "laws of Edward." Two prelates, Lanfranc of Canterbury a nd Geoffrey of Coutances, were his chief advisers.  Among h is later military campaigns was that against Malcolm, Kin g of Scotland, who submitted to him at the Forth; his suppr ession of two rebellions in Maine; and his invasion of th e French Vexin. During the latter he was injured, when hi s horse plunged on the burning cinders of Nantes, which cit y he had sacked and burned.  He was carried to Rouen, wher e he died.

Notes for HENRY I BEAUCLERC KING OF ENGLAND *:

[horrocks[1].FTW]

King Henry I of England, surnamed Beauclerc.  He was burie d in the Abbey of Reading, which he had founded. He was giv en an excellent education, including the English law and la nguage. As a younger son he was not expected to inherit th e crown.  Of his elder brothers, William received England a nd Robert became Duke of Normandy.  When William died, in 1 100, Robert was on a Crusade and Henry seized the crown.  H e issued a charter by which he promised to restore the "law s of Edward," exchange customary fees for the unlimited dem ands of his father and brother on the barons, stop the plun dering of the church, and force the barons to do justice t o their tenants.  By marrying a descendant of the Anglo-Sax on Kings he completed his policy of allying himself with th e native English.  In both England and Normandy he was mor e popular with the non-feudal classes than with the barons .  English levies helped him repel an invasion of Robert an d his victory at Tinchebrai was regarded as an English vict ory in revenge for Hastings.  Several times he was successf ul in putting down rebellions and conspiracies in Normandy . The chief institution created during his reign was tha t of the exchequer. Source: Royal Gen.  In 1106 he capture d Robert and held him until he died. Thus he was also Duk e of Normandy from 1106 to 1135. Henry proved to be a har d but just ruler.  He apparently died from overeating lampr eys!

He was crowned 6 Aug 1100, at Westminster by Maurice, Bisho p of London. He was the last male heir of the Norman line . He was called "Beauclerc" (or " Good Scholar"). He died a t age 67, of ptomaine poisoning from a meal of lampreys.

[horrocks[1].FTW]

Matilda, daughter of King Henry I of England and Matilda o f Scotland. On account of the death of her brother she wa s heir to the throne of England and received formal recogni tion as her father's successor.  The Great Council of Engla nd, however, was reluctant to acknowledge a female sovereig n and this feeling increased on her marriage to the heir o f Anjou and Maine.  On the death of her father in 1135 hi s nephew, Stephen of Mortain and Boulogne, son of Stephen H enry, Count of Blois, by Adela, daughter of William the Con queror, was recognized in both England and Normandy and h e rushed across the channel and was crowned King.  Throug h extortionate demands on the barons and a quarrel with th e church over the question of its secular jurisdiction, h e lost their support. Matilda came to England and with th e help of her half-brother, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, con tested the royal title.  The contest continued for years .  Stephen was captured at Lincoln, but the Earl of Glouces ter was soon after captured and an exchange was arranged .  Meanwhile Geoffrey of Anjou completed the conquest of No rmandy and Matilda retired there, still claiming the Englis h crown.  In 1153 Henry, son of Matilda and Geoffrey, appea red in England.  After Stephen lost his son Eustace, throug h a sudden illness, he recognized Henry as his heir and the y cooperated to repress anarchy. Source: Royal Gen.  Give s birth as abt 1103/04 and death at Rouen 10 Sep 1167. Ance stral file has 10 Sep 1169. Above had 30 Jan 1164.  She fi rst invaded England in 1139. She and Geoffrey captured Norm andy and in 1152 the Treaty of Wallingford recognized Henr y as Stephen's heir.  Burke says she was betrothed in her e ight year (1119) to Henry V (the marriage was in 1114 so 11 19 is a typo).

She was called Maud. She was married as a young girl to th e Holy Roman Emperor. They had no children. After his deat h she was married to the Count of Anjou. Throughout her lif e she kept her title of Empress.

Councillor John Lewis

Lived at St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., Virginia. and Ware Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.

Between 1689 and 1702 there were several entries pertaining to Col. John Lewis in the St. Peter's Parish Vestry book in New Kent County where Chemokins was located. He received a large tract of land at Chemokins when his father died. Their first home was probably Chemokins as Elizabeth's brother Robert had inherited Warner Hall from his mother. On Jan. 5, 1695 a John Lewis was elected Vestryman for St. Peter's Parish. In the minutes of Mar 4, 1702 "Mr. John Lewis lately departed this county." This is perhaps when they moved to Warner Hall, which became their home.

In 1704 the Rent Roll shows John Lewis' holdings included 2000 acres in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., 300 acres in York Co., 2600 acres in New Kent Co., and several grants in King & Queen Co., the largest for 10,100 acres. The 2600 acres in New Kent Co. is the exact size of the Chemokins estate.

His brother Edward inherited their father's estate on Poropotank Creek in King & Queen County.

In 1704 he was appointed to Council, one of only 12 members at that time and sworn in 26 June 1707. He served for 20 years until his death.

Sept 2, 1707, he was appointed Commander of King and Queen County, Virginia.

In 1717 he owned in fee-simple Chemokins alias Port Holy, a tract in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County which he deeded that year to his son Charles.

Buried at Warner Hall Graveyard

 Elizabeth Warner

Born at Chesake, Gloucester Co., Virginia.

Had fourteen children; only nine are known

Daughter of Col. Augustine Warner, Jr. and Mildred Reade

Mildred Washington, the daughter of Lawrence Washington and Mildred Warner, Elizabeth's sister, was orphaned by the death of both parents when she was not yet four years old. In 1704 her stepfather, George Gale, left Mildred and her two brothers with their kinsman John Washington in Stafford Co., Virginia and it was here she grew up. At Warner Hall was Mildred's only living maternal aunt, Elizabeth Warner. There is reason to believe Madam Lewis of Warner Hall invited her deceased sister's children to her home for long visits, and it was probably here that Mildred Washington met her future husband, John Lewis, the nephew of her uncle Col. John Lewis, and son of Capt. Edward Lewis. Her brother John Washington married Catherine Whiting in Gloucester Co and it is evident that the Washingtons of Westmoreland County became acquainted and married persons at a distance from the place of their nativity.

Died in Gloucester Co., Virginia

Buried at Warner Hall, Gloucester Co., Virginia.
