Ken

Thanks again for the response and the info.

Here's what I have on John thru 2 generations. I have info out to 4/5 generations.

Can you cite for me a document that shows John, Daniel related to each other and the the girls ?

Al D.

1) 1. John DOUGLASS

————————————————————————————————————————

Birth Date: 5 Nov 1777

Death Date: 16 Jul 1844

Burial Place: Douglass Campground Cemetery

Notes:

A John Dugless is listed on the 1820 US Census for the state of Tennessee, Maury County. That listing included (males) 1 un der 10, 2 10 to 16, 2 26 to 45; (females) 3 under 10, 1 10 to 16 and 1 26 - 45. Most significantly it includes one female slave, 46 and over. These dates roughly coincide with the ages of all of John's family including the slave.

This listing of the elderly slave would tend to confirm the story that Ira Shane relates in his book, that John Douglass had a elderly slave woman with him when he came to Illinois. The story goes on to state that when John crossed the Ohio into Illinois (a free state), he offered this person,Hannah Jaminson, her freedom, but she elected to stay with the family, saying she wanted to stay "wid dese chilluns"25

John was a veteran of the Tenn. Militia, having served from 13 Nov 1814 to 13 Nov. 1815. He was a private in Capt Bird Stratton Hurt's Co. in Col. William Metcalf's 1st Regt., in Gen. William Carrol's Div. The Battle of New Orleans took place on 8 Jan 1815, thus John's claim that he was with Jackson at New Orleans seems likely.44

The Land Records of Maury Co. also indicate that John and Daniel (possibly a brother) conducted land transactions from 1815 thru 1825/26.

Maury Co. Court records also show John being appointed supervisor of the Road in his area.

1830 Cenus of Maury Co. Tenn contain no record of either John or Daniel Douglass.34

Listed among the signers of a petition presented to the Tennessee General Assembly to form Maury Co.. Petition dated Aug 1807.88

For some years carried the marriage of John and Margaret Jameson as having taken place on Nov 1805 in Barren Co. Ky. Now (12/00) know that that marriage was between a different John Douglass and Margaret Jameson. This John was the son of a george Douglass originally from Wythe Co. Va and never left Barren Co.

Turns out that the above par is all wrong. In an affadavit given by Margaret Jameson Douglass on 27 Jan 1851, for the purpose of claiming Veterans Land for which her husband was eligible, Margaret claims marriage to John Douglass in Barren Co. Ky. on 24 Mar 1803. The marriage was conducted by John Howe

(1) 1. Daniel? DOUGLASS

————————————————————————————————————————

Birth Date:

Birth Place:

Death Date: Oct 1815

Notes:

This is a VERY speculative entry. I include him in the family only because he was listed next to John Dugless in the 1820 Us Census of Maury Co. Tenn. He lived close by.

Was in Maury Co. Tenn prior to 1812. Land Records show him there until 1829, when references to him cease.

Editor Note: The Public Domain Land Records in the Archives in Springfield. , Ill., show Daniel buyin land in Bond County (where he settled) and in Hamilton Co. (Where John settled). More circustantial evidence of a connection.

Listed among the signers of a petion presented to the Tennessee General Assembly to form Maury Co. Petition dated Aug 180787

Accoding to Janice Cozad, Daniel was married in Barren Co. Ky. A John Douglass and Margaret Jameson were married there also. Another fact that seems to show a connection to John, at least.

Thanks for the prompt reply and for the info.

Hate to look a "gift horse in the mouth" but what is your source for this info?

How do you fit into the picture ?

I have extensive info on John and Daniel. Would be willing to share, if you are interested ?

It is possible that Wm, John, Daniel, etc. are from Halifax Co. VA. Does that fit anything you have ?

FIRST TAXPAYERS OF GRANT COUNTY, KENTUCKY, 1820

Compiler: Robert L. Bickers, 330 Homestead Ct., Providence, UT 84332
E-mail: bobbickersutah@@attbi.com

Submitted by Nancy Bray with the permission of Robert L. Bickers.
Thanks Bob & Nancy!

In 1820 Grant County was created from a portion of Pendleton County. The following is an alphabetical list of the names of the first taxpayers of Grant County, followed by the water course, if given, on which the taxpayer's property lay. Occasionally the taxpayer owned additional land in a county other that Grant; in those instances, the county or counties and water courses, if available, are also provided. The material was transcribed by Robert L. Bickers from a microfilm of the original tax book. Mr. Bickers has done genealogical research since 1966. He is the compiler of five volumes of Grant Co., Ky. Newspaper Abstracts covering the Williamstown Courier (1880-1909).

Williamstown Cemetery

No one knows the identity of the first person buried in Williamstown Cemetery. Parts of it have been buried in since the early 1830's. The Kendall family owned the majority of its boundaries at the time the cemetery was established and was probably among the first to bury there. On April 16, 1859, a group of Williamstown businessmen purchased approximately 6 acres of land from Alfred kendall for the purpose of established a cemetery company. The person in charge of the purchase was John F. Sheriff, a long time resident of the county and a trustee of the company. A small lot adjacent to the old Baptist Church yard was excluded from the sale. It was to be used by the Kendall family for a burial plot. In the mid to late 1880s, the company contracted a brick storage vault to be built at the cost of $1,000. The vault was used for the purpose of storing tools and the temporary storage of a deceased person, when the weather or some other reason would not permit the digging of a grave. The old vault stands today, after 100 years of use, in the center of the old section of the cemetery and is still used for the storage of tools and equipment. On July 12, 1889, an additional 8-1/2 acres were purchased from Mrs. Phoebe Kendall Collins who had inherited the property from her father. The trustee in charge of this purchase was E. H. Smith, a nephew of H. B. Smith the first County Court Clerk of Grant County, and a very prominent attorney at that period of time. Other members of the company were T. L. Clark, whose father was an old pioneer of the county, J. H. Webb, G. N. Webb, P. T. Zinn, N. H. Jeffers, and D. L. Cunningham. The trustees and member of the company would purchase large lots in the cemetery and lay off their family plots and then sell the remainder for profit. This advertisement was copied from a 1909 Williamstown Courier.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I have glanced through the Hubbard B. Smith letters. There are approximately three letters from family members. One is from Hubbard's father, Reuben. Another is from a George Elliot, who signs himself "friend and brother" (brother in law, perhaps?) and another from Hubbard's brother Edmond (I am not certain of the spelling). The letter from his father does not have a location on it, so I am not sure where the father was. I also did not see a mention of the mother's name anywhere. The rest of the papers are mostly military orders, receipts, etc.

If there is anything more I can do for you, please let me know.

Ken

Here is my interpretation of George Elliott's letter:

This is the letter from George Elliott, Jr.:

“Garrard County June 27th 1813

Dear Hubbard

This, if it comes to hand will inform you that we are all well as we are in common(?): Nothing is of importance to write: But a number of our acquaintances has got home from the batel of the fifth of May and members that I heard from are whole and save. Great satisfaction to number of our neighbors: I wish you to write frequently how you are and tell the acquaintances that is with you: We were troubled for a while for you till we hear you was not in the action. Your father, mother is well and all your brothers and sisters also. I conclude with every sentiment of love and friendship that can come from a friend and brother.

George Elliott

P.S. All of the children joins in sending their love to you jointly with esteem.”

Here is Reuben's letter:

June the 8th Day 1813

Well my son, God in his providence has so ordered that I have once more the chance of writing a few more lines to you to let you know our present state of health. We all share a reasonable portion at present thanks to the name of God for his mercy.

I received yours dated eighth of April which gave me great satisfaction to hear you was still on praying ground. I hope you will not neglect that great command of our Lord and put your whole thought and confidence in Him and not in the arm of flesh. Man will decrease but God won’t.

I was sorry to hear of your illness but it might be best at that time. There is nothing new amongst us worth relating but Spencer Stone’s wife had departed life since you was hear. She died in a few minutes after she was taken without sickness or pain, just taken with shortness of breath and quickly went home.

My son I long to hear from you. I hope you won’t neglect us all but send by every chance. Likewise your brother Ephraim. If you see him give our love to him and if you can rite to me word about him as well as yourself.

I hope the Lord will bless you both. If you live to return, I hope you will come back with honor. If you die, die with the same.

All friends is well and neighbors as far as I know but George Elliott’s daughter Chattey is not to say well at this time. Your grandfather and mother desired to be remembered to you and some more of your neighbors and likewise your brothers and sisters joins with greatest love to you and give all their greatest wishes for your return.

I have nothing more worth relating to you but shall conclude with ascribing myself your father till death. Your mother joins me with her greatest love.

Reuben Smith

Do you know if Hubbard was the same man as the Hubbard B. Smith who showed up in Lexington Newspaper accounts as a Trustee of Transylvania U, a Trustee of Lexington, a writer of legal documents and a grocer?

Thanks. The letter made it through this time. I used Eudora to download it this time.

I think that "Chatty" would be a nickname for Charity. Have your written the letter out? In trying to read it, I am having trouble reading the dark areas after Chatty down to "greatest."

Ted

Hi Ted, I have been a little busy, the reason I am just now replying. No I dind write out the letter from Reuben to Hubbard Smith. The letters are about what I received as far as being legible...Ken
