Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed.,
1887, Grant Co.

Tim NEEDHAM, cashier of the bank of Williamstown, was born in Cumberland
County, Ill., May 28, 1842, and is the fifth child of a family of eleven
born to P. S. and Rebecca (South) NEEDHAM. P. S. NEEDHAM was born in
Pennsylvania, April 24, 1812. He came to Kentucky with his parents when
he was twelve years of age, and settled in Hardin County where he was
reared. He was a carpenter and millwright by trade, also a miller and
farmer. After marrying he moved to Cumberland County, Ill, lived there
a few years, then returned to Hardin County, Ky., and remained until his
death, which occurred June 9, 1886. He was a strict member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mrs. Rebecca NEEDHAM was born in
Virginia, and was a daughter of William and Margaret (Donan) South. At
an early age Tim NEEDHAM was taken to Hardin County, Ky., by his
parents, and was educated at the common schools. At the age of sixteen
he commenced teaching, and taught until 1853. He then commenced to read
law under Judge Horace G. V. Wintersmith, of Elizabethtown, Ky., and was
admitted to the bar in the fall of 1864. He attended the Louisville Law
School in 1865-66, and was one of the thirty-eight who graduated in the
spring of the latter year. He immediately returned to Elizabethtown,
pursued his profession diligently and successfully until 1869, when he
moved to Louisville, and, in conjunction with his practice, published a
paper called the Kentucky Templar, afterward known as the Good Templars'
Advocate. He remained in Louisville for about five years, and while
there was a law partner with Maj. W. R. Kinney and J. D. Duncan. In
1874 moved to Owensboro, Ky., and became a law partner of Judge Little,
remained two years, then returned to Louisville, and engaged in the
newspaper business and temperance work for about three years. Next he
went to Williamstown, and was a law partner with E. H. Smith from 1878
to 1882. October 3, 1878, he married Kate Smith, of Grant County, Ky.,
daughter of E. H. and Sallie C. (O'Hara) Smith. One child has blessed
this union, Hubbard S. In 1880 Mr. NEEDHAM secured the charter for the
Bank of Williamstown, became cashier in 1882, and still holds that
position. He owns 130 acres of fine land, and a nice brick residence
and business block in Williamstown. Mr. NEEDHAM is a natural born
lawyer, an original thinker, and an able speaker, and success similar
to his has seldom been achieved. His gifts to charity and for
benevolent purposes are more than the common public know of. He is a
live, energetic citizen; a gentleman of ability, culture and varied
accomplishments. His moral character is high, and his manners modest
and unassuming. He is a strict member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church South, is a member of the I.O.O.F., Temple of Honor, Good
Templars and Sons of Temperance. His wife is a member of the Catholic
Church. August 1, 1887, he was elected to the Legislature as the
nominee of the Democratic party.

EDUCATION

The Williamstown Graded School, A long step forward
A splendid board of trustees
and an efficient corps of teachers in charge

The board of Trustees that was elected in 1887 consisted of Captain A. G. DeJarnette, Tim Needham, R. H. Elliston, N.H. Tully and W. G. Cram. As their terms have expired they have been re-elected and no change has been made in the organization. Six better men for the place could not have been selected from the entire district.

President A. G. DeJarnette is one of the ablest lawyers in Northern Kentucky. He was born in Owen County September 22, 1841. His parents moved to Grant County when he was quite young, at the age of eighteen he entered Kentucky University, but returned home at the close of the first year on account of sickness. In 1862, he entered the Confederate Army as a private in Company G. Fifth Kentucky Calvalry. At Nelson's Cross Roads, in one of the first engagements of the Company, he was severely wounded in the left arm and permanently disabled. After the war, he re-entered the Kentucky University and graduated from the law department in 1869. Immediately thereafter he begun the practice of his profession at Williamstown and for the past twenty years has been one of the leading members of the bar. In 1880 he was elected Commonwealth's Attorney on the Democratic ticket for the Eleventh judicial district, he served six years and won a splendid reputation as a fearless prosecutor. In 1869 he married Miss Alice Elliston, daughter of Joseph T. and Marie Elliston. Four children have been born to them all of whom will reap the benefits to be derived from the Graded School. Mr. DeJarnette is not only a good lawyer, but a safe and successful business man. He services on the board of trustees have been invaluable. He is a director in the Bank of Williamstown and Oddfellow and a member of the Baptist church and withal a good citizen neighbor and friend.

Treasurer Tim Needham was a "sucker" boy by birth, having been ushered into his troublesome world in Cumberlain County, Ill., May 28, 1842 being within a few months of the same age of President DeJarnette. He is the fifth child of a family of eleven children, born to P. S. and Rebecca Needham. His parents removed to Hardin County, Kentucky, in his early boyhood where he was raised receiving his education at the common schools of the neighborhood. He commenced teaching when 16 years old. Studied law and was admitted to the bar at Elizabethtown in 1864, afterwards attended and graduated at the Louisville Law School. From 1869 to 1878 Mr. Needham practiced law, was Secretary and Treasurer of the I. O. of G. T. and editor of the Good Templars Advocate at Louisville. October 3 of the latter year he married Miss Kate Smith, daughter of the late Hon E. H. Smith and Sallie C. Smith; one child has blessed the Needham home - Hubbard S. who is a bright student in the Intermediate department of the Graded School. From 1878 to 1882 Mr. Needham practiced law as a partner of Mr. Smith, in the latter year accepting the position of cashier of the Bank of Williamstown, which position he yet holds. In 1887 he was elected to a seat in the Legislature. He served his term and won considerable reputation as a profound thinker and forcible debater, and had the credit of introducing and passing one of the most important general laws on the statute books of Kentucky; the Graded Free School Bill, by which any district can avail itself of the privileges of the Graded School system. Last August Mr. Needham was elected State Senator from this senatorial district, and is a probable candidate for re-election. Mr. Needham is a natural born lawyer, a profound and original thinker, an able speaker, a live energetic citizen, and a gentleman of ability culture and rare accomplishments. His moral character is high and his manners modest and unassuming. He is a member of the Methodist Church and an Oddfellow. He is one of the largest taxpayers in Graded School district, but notwithstanding that fact, he has been unselfishly devoted to the school's interest.

Society.

JAMES A. O'HARA. One of the most progressive and up-to-date business
institutions in Williamstown is the model drug establishment of James A.
O'Hara & Co., on Main Street opposite the post-office. Centrally
located, with a magnificent store-room, handsomely finished and
furnished and stocked from cellar to attic with the best line of drugs
that money can buy, it makes a showing worthy of a city of ten thousand
people. The presiding genius of this institution is James A. O'Hara,
the second son of Dr. R. H. O'Hara. Jim is a product of Williamstown,
and of the common and high schools of this city. He was born here
February 28th, 1871. He began business as a druggist as a partner with
his father just 15 years ago. He is a graduated pharmacist, and like
his father, who has been in the drug business for a lifetime, is said
to be one of the best druggists in the state. R. H. O'Hara and Jim's
baby are the company in this institution. On January 12th, 1898, Mr.
O'Hara was united in marriage to Miss Eugenia Hogan, daughter of the
late Hon. W. N. Hogan. To this union one child, Robert Newton, has
been born. Mr. O'Hara owns a nice residence, in which he resides, on
High Street. He has recently purchased for $5,500.00 the handsome
brick building in which he is doing business, and is well fixed in
every way to take care of the future. In politics he is a Democrat
and takes a very active interest in all political matters. C. O.
Porter, accommodating and courteous, is in his employ in the drug
store, and in his store-room is located the long distance telephone
exchange.

Ken

I would like to have whatever information you have on the Reuben Smith family. I have been looking for a long time in the wrong direction because Mrs. Odell in her book on Captain George Elliott claimed Frances was a daughter of a Francis Smith and Ann Preston.

I am descended from George and Frances' daughter Charity Elliott who married Daniel Yager. They had a daughter Mary Yager who married William Hull in Gibson Co. IN. They were my 3x great grandparents. I learned about Reuben while looking at a page by someone named Taylor but my e-mail to them bounced and then I found your statement in the GenForum. I like to document everything I can with sources, dates place, etc.

Thanks

Help please? I just copied a 1784 survey of my Barren Co. James Neville
from before he got to Barren Co. He made a stop on the way in Lincoln Co.
where he accumulated close to 2000 acres of land. I am curious about the
wording on one of those surveys and am asking for any and all opinions.
Maybe someone else has seen similar wording somewhere. The survey states
" Surveyed for James Nevil assee (assignee) of John Hammilton, 400 acres of
Land by virtue of a Certificate obtained from ye Court of Lincoln County for
the Relief of the Poor, Lying in the said county . . ."

I have a couple of questions about this wording. . .

1. Would this land have been awarded or purchased?

2. Who was the certificate from the county court have been to, Hammilton or
Neville?

3. What could the wording "for the Relief of the Poor" be a reference to?

Again, any and all opinions will be gratefully accepted.

Updated 28 July 2002

As a brief background of Lincoln County, it was originally part of Virginia, and was formed in 1780. The county seat is located in Stanford, Kentucky. Most of Kentucky was part of Virginia in the 1700s.Lincoln County was one of the three original counties in Kentucky. In 1776, a part of Fincastle County was taken to form Kentucky County, Virginia. Kentucky County was then divided by the Virginia legislature in 1780 to form the counties of Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln. When Kentucky became a commonwealth in 1792 , nine counties had already been created. They were Nelson, Bourbon, Madison, Mercer, Mason and Woodford. I was reading about the Kenmore Plantation near Fredericksburg, VA. They only mentioned Col. Fielding Lewis building it. Why do you think Martin Maney played any part in it? I am a Maney, also. My line goes thusly: Martin Maney, James Maney Sr., William Bradley Maney, Milus Columbus Maney, William Perry Maney, Thomas Gibbs Maney.
The article said the plantation was built in the 1770s with the help of indentured servants. Was he one of them?

The Lewis family I am researching comes originally out of Virginia. Col Fielding Lewis was a contemporary of George Washington, and also a surveyor. His line of Lewis people went from Virginia to Tennessee, and eventually to Missouri just prior to, and just after, the Civil War. They are intermarried with our Moore family. I have not been able to get much past Missouri, although I do know that some went to Texas.

I have been told that there is a 5 volume book set on the Lewis family, and that is what was shared with me by Norman Spiva, a Lewis researcher. The books are "Pioneer Lewis Families" compiled by Michael L. Lewis, CM, Cook Publishers, Evansville, Indiana, 47712. Perhaps you might look for that set of books to see if your Dovey might be there. I wish I could help you, but I don't recall ever seeing her name. I am sure that there were Lewis people who went west and even into the north west areas, I just don't know who they might be. I hope I have helped somewhat, and that you can find the volumes I am speaking of, in your local library. Warm Regards, Mary Hicks

That was interesting history you provided about Fielding and George Washington's relationship. It's somewhat puzzling that George wouldn't loan his brother in law some money when he was down and out. Guess he knew some things that we are not privy to today about Fielding. I've been to Kenmore and Mount Vernon and was amazed at the interior stucco designs on the ceilings in both houses. I understand that George was so impressed by the stucco work at Kenmore, he had the same person do the stucco at Mount Vernon. No one knows the name of the man, only a reference to the stucco man by George Washington in his debit journal. I have a curiosity about George, his mother and the Lewis's of Kenmore. I've been in the home of George's mother there in Fredericksburg too. Any additional information you might pass on about these people would be appreciated.
