We thought a bit about the origins of Hedwig would be appropriate on our site. Unfortunately, not being Hedwig experts as such, we cannot be entirely sure of all our 'facts', but we hope we haven't made any unforgiveable errors! We'd be very grateful to anyone who could help us out a bit in this section...

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was born from the childhood experiences of John Cameron Mitchell , who as a young boy was sent to an English boarding school which tried to beat his feminine side out of him... His European au pair was the start of Hedwig, when he realised that she had another more lucrative job. John Cameron Mitchell was the son of the local army commander and Tommy's character reflects his upbringing.

Over the years the story was developed in bars and clubs until John Cameron Mitchell and Steven Trask, who had met four years earlier on a plane, were persuaded to actually put it all together into 90 minutes of rock theatre. The underlying metaphor is an obvious one, based on The Symposium by Plato - the search for the other half is Hedwig's quest in life.

Hedwig was originaly presented at the Westbeth Theatre Centre on 27th February 1997. On 14th February 1998 Hedwig and the Angry Inch opened at the Jane Street Theatre to rave reviews on what was to be the start of a very amazing show.....

Since then Hedwig has continued to become an even greater sucess. There have been productions all over the USA and Canada, not to mention one in Iceland. (For more info one this visit Wanda's site). Hedwig was put onto celluliod in the summer of 2000 with John Cameron Mitchell, Steven Trask and Miriam Shor reprising their original roles. It was shown at the Sundance festival earlier this year and received once again amazing reviews. Hedwig is now on general release in America and due to open in the UK August 31st (according to The Face magazine).
