Yes....As everyone knows, the three of us (A, J & Rachel) came to Hedwig from a very Rocky orientated background. Naturally, some of this "rockyness" is going to rub off on anything we touch (*cough*) - like Hedwig. (Not that we asked Nathan really nicely, one night, to touch his head or anything!) It all began, if we remember correctly, on the tube (Northern line, somewhere between Embankment and Angel...), on the way back from one of our earlier shows. We thought, well wouldn't it be nice to have costumes or something for the show. This would have been SUCH a good idea if only we'd had more than 6 weeks to do it! We had to scale down our ideas......(though there is a Hedwig dress in the making... lol, okay with our sewing skills / non-skills that's never gonna get anywhere but hey, it was a fun idea!).
It all began when one of us, god knows which one, came up with the idea of waving flags in Sugar Daddy. And so Gummipation was invented. Ideas followed and on the 23rd October 2000 it all began.
So what do we do.............?!
Rules must be followed!
We love the people on stage so, don't try and kill them with anything that is likely to hurt or anything water based which could blow them up.
Use a bit of tact here people, don't mess the show up so people who have no idea what is going on get mad. And of course avoiding pissing off the cast even in the slightest is always a good idea!
MOST importantly don't ruin the atmosphere of Hedwig, when it gets serious that's when we shut up and let them get on with it. It is so bad at Rocky when props and heckles are done at really potent moments, so just don't do it....it's not fun.
As with all things let it grow and add new stuff if it's witty and fun...this is what we managed to come up with in London.......
- Gummi bears given to Hedwig in Sugar Daddy. We usually either threw them at their feet or handed them out, if we were on the front row, when Hedwig runs round. (We're talking small packets here not individual bears which stick to the floor)! Haribo are the best ones..but so hard to find..Germany is the best place, but you can get huge tubs of mixed Haribo packets and pick out the Gummi packets, if you like chewy sweets this works well!
- On "Lord I'm coming home" (at the end of Sugar Daddy), American flags waved about as Hedwig does. We had funky little ones found in small novelty shop, but there was also a huge one kicking around which worked really well.
- This one might only apply to London, because the line is not actually in the script...but this is how it went.... you remember the Siberia song..."'...we've cleansed it for you'....What no fascists in the audience? I could have sworn I saw some Disney executives..." Just before this line we donned some Mickey Mouse ears, which certainly threw Michael a little!
- "Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you are all becoming fans of Hedwig..." At this point we cheer a hell of a lot and throw roses/flowers on the stage as a sign of our appreciation for such a fab person. (You know when we said about dangerous objects - roses should be dried and dethorned, many an hour wasted in McDonalds doing that - although boy were we glad when Mark held one between his teeth - if the thorns had still been on, the consequences could have been distressing!).
- Costumes, costumes, costumes....They would be such a good idea if anyone is really good at making stuff. We have t-shirts for the three of us which run along the lines of WE (Jules) LOVE (Anna) HEDWIG (Rachel). These were very fun but it takes forever to work out where to sit so they make sense otherwise it all ends up a bit too art nouveau! Maybe we will make Gummi t-shirts...if anyone wants one?!
