David Pugh and Michael Medwin formed David Pugh Limited in 1989. David Pugh Limited's first West End production was Steel Magnolias at the Lyric Theatre, which was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award. The Company then produced the stage adaptation of the top television comedy series Bread, with Jean Boht and the television cast which toured throughout the United Kingdom.
David Pugh first produced The Official Tribute to The Blues Brothersin 1991. It turned out to be one of the major West End musical successes of the year, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement. The original West End production ran for nearly a year and was followed by a European and UK tour. In 1994 and 1997 the production returned to the West End where it received universally outstanding reviews.
David Pugh's production of A Passionate Woman by Kay Mellor, starring Stephanie Cole, opened at the Comedy Theatre on 7th November 1994, to great critical acclaim.
In 1996 David Pugh and Sean Connery produced Art at Wyndham's Theatre, winning an Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy and the Olivier Award for Best Play. Now in its fifth year, it has subsequently become the most successful play in London for the last 25 years. Art opened on Broadway at the Royale Theatre on 1 March 1998, winning the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play, and last year toured throughout the United States. Last year the UK tour broke all box office records and it is currently touring the UK again. Art can now be seen at the Whitehall Theatre.
In December, David co-produced with the Royal National Theatre Yasmin Reza's play Life X 3 - her first new play since Art, which subsequently transferred to The Old Vic.
