Misc. Fact:  The Origin of Muster Cards -
In the 1890s, under the direction of Capt. Fred C. Ainsworth, the U. S. War Department compiled the military service records of Civil War soldiers from company muster rolls (normally made out every 2 months), and other regimental records. Since the rolls had become worn and frail from years of constant use, each entry on every record was copied on a separate cardSource: The Union: A Guide to Federal Archives Relating to the Civil War, Munden and Beers, National Archives and Record Administration, Washington, DC.

Note: Payment is required BEFORE service records are looked up and copied. I will do lookups from the index ONLY for free. If no service record is found, I keep the five dollar lookup fee, and return the three dollars for copy/postage to you..
