Madison Central (0-0) vs. Bryan Station (0-0) August 22, 2003

Madison Central finished 9-2 last season and returns a good nucleus of veterans for new coach Kenny Turner.  Some of the top returnees will be 6-6 260 pound Sr. OL/DL Mark Cornett, 6-3 225 pound Sr. RB/LB Matt Bell, 5-7 165 pound Jr. RB/LB Thomas Estill, 5-9 169 pound Sr. RB/DB Evan King, etc.  The Indians could open the season with a sophomore, 5-8 140 pound Andrew Mathis, at quarterback.

Bryan Station finished 2-8 last season and begins the year with a 1997 Bryan Station graduate, Traye Moore, as their new head coach.  Bryan Station should be led this year by 5-8 190 pound Sr. RB/DB Chris Seals.  6-0 180 pound Sr. Drew Moran and 6-1 210 pound Jr. RB/LB Larmont Lawson are expected to share time at QB.  The Defenders will have some size in the line with 6-6 300 pound Sr. Kevin Jacobs and 6-3 293 pound Sr. Dwayne Coy.  Bryan Station also has a promising Jr. wide receiver in 6-0 155 pound Jamuan Andrews

The Kenny Turner era got off to a great start for Madison Central behind the fleet feet of QB Andrew Mathis as the Indians claimed a 40-16 victory over Bryan Station.  Mathis rushed for three scores, passed for another TD, and returned a kickoff 75 yards for yet another score.  Madison Central took a 14-0 first quarter lead on a Mathis 17 yard TD run and a 36 yard interception return by Evan King.  Bryan Station fought back to within four points, 20-16, on two TD runs by Chris SealsMathis struck again on the ensuing kickoff as he raced 75 yards to the end zone to give Madison Central a 26-16 lead at the half.

Madison Central scored two third quarter touchdowns and held Bryan Station scoreless in the second half to claim the victory.  Madison Central gained 285 yards on the ground and 27 yards through the air, while Bryan Station passed for 217 yards but could only net 35 yards on the ground.  Although Bryan Station suffered a convincing defeat and suffers a lack of depth and experience at key positions, a very young coaching staff displayed some imaginative play calling which should bode well for the future.

Madison Central was led on the ground tonight by Mathis with 78 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries.  He also completed three of five passes for 27 yards including a 15 yard scoring strike to Josh StewartSteven Stunson added 71 yards on nine carries and Matt Bell carried the ball six times for 67 yards.  The Indians were led on defense by Jr. DB Ryan Barnes with nine solo and one assisted tackle.

Bryan Station was led on the ground tonight by Chris Seals, who carried the ball 24 times for 93 yards and two scores.  Drew Moran completed six of 20 passes for 170 yards.  Jamuan Andrews caught three passes for 113 yards and Larmont Lawson snared two passes for 71 yards.
