Scott County (9-0) vs. Lafayette (6-3) November 1, 2002

Scott County has claimed the district title and is assured of reaching the playoffs.  They will finish 10-0 if they defeat Lafayette tonight and complete a sweep of Lexington 4A schools.  However, four teams are battling for the remaining three district playoff berths.  Lafayette (3-2), Woodford County (3-2), Paul Dunbar (3-2), and Henry Clay (3-3) are all in contention.  Lafayette needs to either defeat Scott County tonight or they need Tates Creek to upend Woodford County to secure a playoff berth.

Both teams feature a powerful ground attack.  Scott County's will be led by 5-9 159 pound So. Ted Sberna, 5-11 177 pound Jr. Phillip Ray, 5-9 220 pound So. Percy Hargrove, and 6-2 226 pound Jr. Courtney White.  When QB Chris Cronin needs to go airborne, his favorite target is 5-11 151 pound Sr. WR Ryan Rennecker.  The Lafayette attack features 5-9 223 pound Sr. RB Elrazor Sharp, 5-8 219 pound Sr. RB Michael Murray, and 5-8 250 pound Jr. FB Cecil Jones.  Speedy 5-6 156 pound Jr. WR/DB Spencer Fain is a threat to go the distance anytime he touches the ball.

Scott County survived a determined Lafayette squad to gain a 26-21 victory and finish the regular season at 10-0.  Scott County took a 6-0 lead on a four yard run by Ted Sberna.  Lafayette took an 8-6 lead on a 25 yard run by Michael Murray and a two point conversion pass from Justin Albrecht to Myron Russell.  Lafayette got a big play from DB Spencer Fain as he intercepted a deflected pass from Ryan Rennecker at the Scott County 41 and ran it back to the Scott County 17.  Lafayette could not capitalize and Scott County recovered a fumble on the six yard line.  Scott County could not move the ball and Lafayette took over on a punt at the Scott County 29.  Elrazor Sharp gave Lafayette a 15-6 lead on a 29 yard TD run.  A Lafayette pass interception was nullified by a pass interference penalty and Scott County had a 1st and 10 from the Lafayette 7.  Ted Sberna scored on a seven yard run and Scott County trailed 15-12 at the half.

Scott County took the kickoff to start the second half and marched down the field to take a 19-15 lead on a one yard run by Chris Cronin.  Scott County extended the lead to 26-15 on a 33 yard run on a fumble recovery by Josh Moore.  Lafayette cut the deficit to 26-21 with 3:14 remaining in the game on a 56 yard run on a fumble recovery by Spencer FainFain recovered an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff and Lafayette took over on the Scott County 42.  Lafayette had a 4th and 8 play from the Scott County 28 when Scott County's Ted Sberna made a game saving tackle.  Michael Murray took the handoff and appeared to have a path to the end zone when Sberna flashed across to make the open field tackle.
