Boyle County (5-0) vs. Lexington Catholic (5-0)  September 22, 2000

Chuck Smith brings his No. 5 rated Boyle County Rebels to unfriendly turf tonight for a battle with the No. 7 ranked Lexington Catholic Knights led by Coach Bob Sphire.  Boyle County averages 54.8 points per game and gives up only 7 points per game for a scoring margin of 47.8 points per contest.

Boyle County is led by rugged 202 pound RB Matt Quinn who ran for 24 touchdowns and gained 1692 yards on the ground last year.  Mr. Quinn has not slowed down this year as he is averaging 130 yards per game.  Boyle County is hardly one dimensional as QB Jeff Duggins and receivers Matt Miller and Boomer Johnson get it done through the air.  The Rebels also have a big force in the line in the person of 6-4 261 OT/DT Travis Leffew.  Boyle County has the luxury of a fine field goal kicker/kickoff man in Jr. Taylor Begley.

Lexington Catholic has a very balanced attack led by Aaron Neff and Seth Christian. on the ground and QB Jacob Doss through the air.  Neff has rushed for 524 of  Catholic's 856 rushing yards. The passing game has accounted for 778 yards.  WR Clay Wolford has caught 24 passes for 424 yards and 8 touchdowns.

This game lived up to the hype as Boyle County won their 21st consecutive game by nipping Lexington Catholic 16-14.  Catholic took an early lead as Erik Robinson blocked a punt and recovered the errant pigskin in the end zone for a TD.  Boyle County moved the ball down the field to gain the tie on a Matt Quinn 1 yard run and a Taylor Begley conversion.  Boyle County took a 9-7 lead at halftime on a safety.

Boyle County opened the second half with an 11 play drive which ended with a Jeff Duggins 10 yard scoring strike to Matt Miller.  Catholic closed the gap to 16-14 in the fourth quarter as So. QB Jacob Doss hit WR Clay Wolford on a 56 yard scoring strike.  Matt Quinn connected on a key 4th-and-1 late in the game to allow Boyle County to hang on to the ball and secure the win.

The Boyle County defense held Catholic to 153 yards on offense but gave up two large plays to make it a close game. Boyle County RB Matt Quinn had a good game on the ground with 159 yards on 34 carries and one score.  QB Jeff Duggins was 12 for 16 through the air with 118 yards and one TD pass.  Jacob Doss passed for 84 yards and one score on 7 for 17 attempts for the night.  Clay Wolford caught three balls for 64 yards and a score.  Doss continues to improve and in my opinion could be very special before he ends his athletic career at Lexington Catholic.  Barring any major upsets, these two fine programs should lock up once more before the campaign ends.
