The Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh have a long history in eastern
Kentucky arriving in 1979. We make our home in a small town that used to
be sustained by "mighty coal". The coal is now a waning enterprise and
our small town of Neon is but a shadow of its former self.
Our Sisters have been in a variety of ministries in eastern Kentucky.
Also working for systemic change is the Catholic
Committee of Appalachia. This organization is spread across several
states which deal with issues that undercut the dignity of the people
in the entire appalachian area such as residues from coal mining, logging, and the
fallout from the welfare changes on the lives of the people.
