VLAD THE IMPALER

Not long after I had created the character Legault, I began to think about his origins and how he became a vampire.

I had watched the old Dracula movies when I was a kid, but found that the man who inspired Dracula was even worse than the fictional character.

Born Vlad Dracula (son of the devil) in the 1400s, Vlad was an evil and bloodthirsty man.

He earned the name "The Impaler" by impaling his enemies with stakes and letting them suffer in agony, sometimes for days.

I thought that this would make a good background for my Legault character and came up with an origin story.

I used the song "Shadows on Your Side" by Duran Duran to tell the tragic tale of Legault's descent into darkness.

I actually filmed the music video more than a month before the opening scene was filmed.

The movie begins with the gypsy Liandra telling about how Vlad was an evil man and would impale his victims. Liandra goes on to tell about the war with the Turks.

Vlad walks out onto the open field at night and is attacked by the Turks. He decaptitates one and stabs another. A third Turk sneaks up behind him and stabs him in the back.

Vlad manages to kill the third Turk and then falls upon the ground, mortally wounded. Liandra the gypsy walks by and he cries out to her to help him.

Liandra warns Vlad that he would rather be dead. She shows her fangs, revealing that she is a vampire. She bites Vlad upon the neck.

Vlad begins to shake and then rises. He feels reborn and says that all the earth will tremble at the mention of his name.

In reality, Vlad was said to have been killed by the Turks and his head sent to Constantinople to the Turkish Sultan. His body was burried in a monastery.

For the purpose of our film, Vlad was not actually slain, but was saved by the gypsy Liandra, who came to regret what she had done. The head sent to Constantinople belonged to a dead soldier as did the body that was buried. No one knew any different except for Vlad and Liandra.

In the next scene, Vlad meets the Lady Lucretia who is wandering the fields at night, crying because her husband and children have been slain by the Turks.

Lucretia is surprised to see Vlad. Seven weeks have passed since he was reported as being killed He explains what has happened to him as he prepares to feed upon his first victim.

In grief over the loss of her family, Lucretia begs Vlad to make her what he is because she has no reason to live, which he willingly does.

The actual music video begins with Vlad seated and dipping bread into a glass of blood. He has invited Legault Von Murovich and his family for a visit. Legault and Vlad had been friends, and Legault is surprised to see his old friend alive.

Vlad sneaks into the bedroom where Legault and his wife are sleeping and bites his friend upon the neck. Lady Bryna discovers what is happening and follows Vlad. When Vlad tries to force himself upon her, Lady Bryna smacks him across the face and goes back into the bedroom.

Legualt's three sons have seen the fight between Vlad and their mother and glare angrily at him. In a rage, Vlad strikes Rustam, the youngest, with a sword and impales Defar and Stefan with stakes.

When Lady Bryna sees her children dieing, she gasps in horror. Vlad steps out from the shadows and pulls out his sword. He decapitates the wife of Legault.

Legault, in the meantime, has become a vampire himself. He finds his wife's headless corpse and wails in grief. He sees his children dieing and realizes that the only way to save them is to turn them into vampires like himself. One by one, he bites them upon the neck, granting them eternal life.

There is a fierce sword fight between Vlad and Legault. Legault picks up a stake and runs at Vlad, impaling him through the heart. Vlad falls to the ground spitting blood. His flesh falls away and nothing is left but a skeleton.

Now Legault is Lord of the Vampires!

The film was made in the summer of 2002 and this was my only portrayal of Vlad the Impaler.
