This years highest award in public transportation in the State of Indiana was award to Van Go. Although in years past, this award has gone to the larger public transportation systems, Van Go was especially selected for their excellence in management and customer service.
YMCA Bettye J McCormick Senior Center Executive Director Nola Davis stated, "It was very humbling to get the award for doing your job. The award itself speaks very highly of the staff. They have really established a great relationship with the riders."
Bryan Nicol said Van Go earned the award by its commitment to enhancing and
improving transit services for rural participants.
Van Go has experienced a 66% increase during their first five years of operation, with 25% of ridership being those going to and from work.
This award as not revealed until Nola Davis, Director, Steve Brochin, Operations Supervisor, and Mary Eakins, Transportation Specialist attended the INCOST meeting in Indianapolis. All were taken by complete surprise as the accomplishments of the 2004 award winner were read. When quote from Vincennes Mayor Terry Mooney were read about the excellence of Van Go, only then did they realize magnitude of their accomplishments.
"I was totally shocked to get it" commented Davis. A celebration dinner was held at the Senior Center for all the van Go drivers and staff. Special commemorative pins as well as plaques were given to the deserving staff.
Van Go is a public transportation system, and is available for those in Knox County. As a scheduled transportation system, riders are asked to call in their reservations at least 24 hours in advance.
