Rottweiler Guardianship

Ownership vs. Guardianship

Below is a poem by an unknown author. It has no title that I am aware of, but I would call it "The Guardians Creed."

"The Guardian's Creed"

I shall be a believer of all that is good in man and all that is deserving in animals.

I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their safety, and uphold their right to a natural death.

I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the unloved and the abandoned, and tend to them in their last days.

I shall not forget their place in the hierarchy of life, nor that we walk in each other's paths.

I shall bear witness to the wonder they bring into our lives, and to the beauty they bestow on our souls.

I shall restore their spirits when they are waning, bind their wounds when they bleed, cradle them when they whimper and comfort them when they mourn.

I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need -a companion and a friend when their time has come.

I shall watch over them and console them and ask that the angels gather them in their arms.

From the creatures of the earth I shall learn the fruits of compassion and undying love.

In their company, I shall indeed be blessed.

Guardianship? What do you mean when you say guardianship? What's the difference between an owner and a guardian?
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: guard•ian \"gar-de-en\ n 1 : custodian 2 : one who has the care of the person or property of another — guard•ian•ship n    Now consider the Merriam-Webster definition of own vb. 1:to have or hold as property (italics are mine here.)
When you own something that implies that you have the right to do with it whatever you wish; after all it belongs to you. Right? Take for example that old sofa over there by the wall; you get tired of it and you have the complete right to throw it out. The same goes for your car; after owning it a couple of years you can be expected to trade it in on another one. After all, you OWN these things.
Guardianship, however, implies a certain responsibility. It means that you have control over the well being of another. This is a responsibility that should never be taken lightly. Guardianship implies dedication. Guardian is also defined as a: conservator, custodian, protector, and Patron Saint (italics are added for emphasis.)    When purchasing, adopting, or fostering a Rottweiler (whether it is a puppy, or an adult dog) one takes on a Guardianship. With any dog there comes responsibilities, but with a Rottweiler come a few "extras."

Rottweiler Guardianship

Rottweilers are "people" dogs; meaning they like to be where their people are. One important thing in Rottweiler Guardianship is making sure your dog is not left alone all day while you are at work. Also, when your Rottweiler is still a puppy you should introduce him/her to as many different people as you can. This is known as socializing, and will help your Rottie to accept friends and family more easily when they get grown (the Rottweiler; not your friends and family!)
Obedience training is a must also. This will be appreciated by friends and family alike; some Rottweilers can go upward of 130 pounds or more and having any dog that big jump up on you can be quite an experience!
Whatever "extra" attention your Rottweiler needs, however, is well worth it! Properly socialized, trained, and disciplined a Rottweiler is an exceptionally loving and loyal dog. They are never happier than when trying to please their "people."
