William H. Lytle. The monument was constructed in 1915 by the Harrison Granite Company of New Youk as a copy of and replacement for an earlier monument in Carrara marble designe by Louis Verhagen, a Belgian sculptor living in New Your. After fifty years the marble was so badly weathered by acid rain that it had to be destroyed. (from A Self Guided Walking Tour by Blanche Linden-Ward)
