Elaine's Valentine's - Flannelboard Story

Flannel Pieces Needed:

A little girl

A tree

A cat

A kitten

A cupid

A bird

A squirrel

It was Valentine's Day and Cupid was dancing his way through the woods.

Cupid, you know is like a baby angel, with snowy white wings and curly hair.

He always carries a little bow and some arrows. As he came out of the woods,

he met a cat. "Good day Mrs. Cat," said Cupid. "Have you sent a valentine

yet?" "A valentine! What is that?" asked Mrs. Cat in surprise. "It is

something you send someone you love. It is Valentine's Day. Everyone in the

world is sending valentines." And then little Cupid shot an arrow into the

air, and was about to run after it, but Mrs. Cat cried, "Wait a minute, pretty

Cupid, will you not help me?" "I'm sorry," smiled Cupid, "But I only put

thoughts into people's hearts, and they do the rest. But I will write some

verses for you and leave them by this tree." And with that he spread his

wings and flew away. "There's no one I love better than little Elaine, and

she's sick," said Mrs. Cat. "I believe I will send her something." She

turned to go back to the barn when she met a squirrel. "Good day Mrs. Cat,"

squirrel said. "Where are you going?" "To find a valentine for sick little

Elaine," answered Mrs. Cat. "There's no one I love better than little

Elaine," said the squirrel, "I will go with you." So Mrs. Cat and the

squirrel went along together. "Hello," said a bird. "Where are you going?"

"Oh, we are going to find a valentine for Elaine. She is very sick," said the

squirrel and Mrs. Cat. "Oh, may I go with you? There is no one I love better

than little Elaine," said the bird. "Oh yes," replied the squirrel and Mrs.

Cat. So Mrs. Cat and the squirrel and the bird walked along together. The

three friends finally reached the barn. Mrs. Cat quickly ran up the stairs to

the loft. Tiny "meow" sounds were coming from under the hay. Mrs. Cat gently

picked up a tiny kitten from under the hay. "You are going to be Elaine's

valentine present," said Mrs. Cat. She will love you so much!" "What will I

give Elaine?" said the squirrel. "You can carry the valentine verse that

Cupid will leave us on the tree," said Mrs. Cat. "And what about me?" said

the bird. "What will I give Elaine?" "You will sing her a song," said Mrs.

Cat. The three friends arrived at the tree, found the note that Cupid had

left and walked along to Elaine's house. Elaine opened her eyes and found the

tiny gray kitten from Mrs. Cat, heard the beautiful music from the bird, and

found the verse from the squirrel:

Little friend, so kind and true

These valentines we send to you

Our very dearest love to tell

We hope you will soon be well

Elaine picked up the kitten and hugged it and the kitten said, "Meow."

Before chanting the rhyme put 5 different colored valentine hearts on a

flannelboard. As the rhyme is chanted each child chooses one valentine from

the flannelboard and gives it to one of their friends. Keep chanting the

rhyme until all are gone then chant these last two lines yourself.

No more valentines at the corner store

"All sold out," says the sign on the door

What can you do to show you care?

When at the store, the shelves are bare?

If you have no flannelboard, you can mount hearts on craft sticks for puppet

play.

through. Don't forget to add care instructions. Remove plastic wrap when

shoots appear. Spritz with water daily. Mow as necessary.

The Tasty Pasty Valentine

Characters Needed:

Mouse

Cheese

Boy

Girl

Hearts

Little gray mouse peeked out of his cozy little house. "I'm so lucky," he

thought. He was lucky. His little hole in the wall was just right, his house

was just right, and the people that lived in the house were just right too.

There was a mother, a father, a boy, and a girl. They had the most delicious

food in their kitchen. Little mouse loved to run in there to get a snack

every now and then.

Little gray mouse's house was in the boy's room and sometimes that caused a

problem. Like right now. Mouse wanted to go to the kitchen, but the boy was

in the room, right in his way. The girl was there too. Oh, how the mouse

wished he could run by them and get a piece of wonderful cheese that he

smelled in the kitchen. But, he was afraid.

"I wish those two would go out and play," thought little mouse.

The boy and girl were working on something. They had red paper and paste and

scissors. He cut up the red paper. They put paste on the paper, they snipped

and they snipped.

"Oh, Dear" said the girl, "The one's I'm making look awful." "My valentines

look terrible, too. Something is wrong," said the boy.

"I wanted them to look pretty, but something is not quite right. They don't

look frilly enough," said the girl.

"Come on," said the boy, "Let's finish them up so we can go out to play.

Maybe when they're dry, they will look better."

"Yes," thought the mouse, "Please finish them and go out to play. I want my

cheese from the kitchen."

The children left and the gray mouse popped out of his hole. He was about to

make a dash for the kitchen, when he stopped. He smelled something wonderful.

Sniff! Sniff! The smell was coming from the red papers that the children had

left. It was the wonderful smell of white paste.

Mouse ran to the papers. Um, the paste smelled good. Nibble, nibble! Little

mouse nibbled all around the papers. In and out and around and around,

nibble, nibble he went, wherever there was the wonderful taste of paste. At

last he finished and went back into his house to go to sleep.

Little gray mouse was still sleeping when the boy and girl came back. They

ran into the room. They stopped.

"Look at our valentines," said the boy.

"Why they're beautiful," said the girl. "I wonder who did this for us. They

look as if they have been nibbled all around." All at once the boy and the

girl looked at one another and they both began to laugh.

"I know who it was," said the boy. "We must thank the special little creature

who did this and I know just how to do it."

Little gray mouse was just waking up from his nap when he smelled something.

What could it be? He had never smelled anything that good before. He ran out

of his hole as fast as he could. The boy and girl were gone, but what a

surprise. There in the middle of the room was some cheese, and on the cheese

was some paste. There were words on the red paper that said, "BE OUR

VALENTINE." Little gray mouse didn't care about the words. He cared about

the cheese and the paste. It's not often you can eat cheese and paste at the

same time.

"What a day!" he said happily. "What a wonderful, tasty day!"

****************************************************************************

Tie Dye Heart

Cut out a heart on white construction paper. Then have the children take

pieces of colored tissue paper and spread the tissue paper all over and

is dry, kids can peel it off and have a tie dye heart.

***********************************************************************

Valentine Gift

Have children glue small scraps of pink, red, and white crepe paper on used

(cleaned) ice cream cups. Then trace the children's hand on red construction

paper, cut out the hand, then glue the two middle fingers down so the hand

says "I Love You" in sign language. Then glue the hand onto the decorated ice

cream cup. Wrap some Hershey Kisses and Hershey Hugs in some red tissue paper

(this is very sticky) and have them paint one of the hearts. When they are

done painting, have them put the other heart on top of the painted heart. Let

dry for a couple of days and then hang in the window.

***********************************************************************

Valentine Memory Books

For Valentine's Day, have the children make memory books. Give them a book

with about 12 blank pages in it. Have them paste their valentines in the

book. Have them decorate their books with markers, crayons, collage

materials, etc.

***********************************************************************

Valentine Poem - Many Endings

This isn't just a valentine

As you can plainly see

It is of course my handprint

Which is a part of me

It's bigger than the last one

Will be smaller than the rest

-----------------------------------

Isn't it fun to see the difference

And how much I am blessed

It's been through lots of frolic

And will be grown up pretty fast

They will be gone soon

Because I'm growing fast

But for the moment, it's the best

Because it came from me

And just think

You help me grow up best

But I just want to tell you

That I love you (fill in name) dear

It's been through lots of frolic

And will be grown up too fast

Just keep this to remind you

That I love you one and all

A simple little reminder

Of yesterdays past

Variation:

This isn't just a valentine

As you can plainly see

It is of course my handprint

Which is a part of me

It's bigger than the last one

Smaller than the next will be

Given to you with lots of love

>From sweet and precious me

(Or sent to you) (Or lovable me)

You can also do this poem using a footprint and change the words accordingly.

H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T, H-E-A-R-T

And heart is its name-o

Continue leaving out a letter on each repeat and use a clap in place of the

letter. Have five heart shapes with a letter on each that 5 children hold in

front of the group and turn over as that letter is left out.

stamps, recycled envelopes, a scale, pens, pencils, lick on stickers (for

stamps), etc. can be used as props for this center.

***********************************************************************

Math Matching Game

Use an old valentine candy box to create a counting/number matching game in

the math center. In each compartment of the box glue a number. Then have

laminated heart shapes with corresponding number or dots to place in the

matching compartment.

Candy kisses

Clear cling wrap

Red, white, and/or pink curling ribbon

Directions:

Place the cling wrap into a rectangular piece. Have the child place the

kisses along the bottom leaving a small space in between. Then roll the wrap

tightly around, starting at the bottom and working towards the top. When you

are finished the kisses should be in the wrap all rolled, like a snake. The

children then tie the curly ribbon between each piece of candy. Encourage the

children to use patterns with the ribbon. When finished, trade with a friend.

Heart Necklace

Materials:

Non toxic polymer modeling clay made to be dried (Sculpey)

Thin ribbon, string, or yarn

Needle with large eye (the duller the needle the better)

Toothpicks

Cookie sheet

Aluminum foil

Clear acrylic spray

Directions:

Warm up the modeling clay by rolling it in your hands for a few minutes. To

make the beads just roll out as many uniform size balls as you want beads.

Take a toothpick and insert it gently through each bead to make a hole for the

string to go through. Set them all on a foil lined cookie sheet. Next, roll

a small amount of clay about 2" wide x 2" high x ¼" diameter. Using a small

heart cookie cutter cut out heart shapes. Insert toothpick in one side and

out the other of heart to create a hole for the string. Place on foil lined

cookie sheet with beads.

Heat in oven according to manufacturer directions. Cool completely.

Taking a small box press a bunch of holes in it to insert toothpicks in to set

beads on to be sprayed. Make sure holes are far enough apart that beads will

not be touching. Spray with acrylic spray according to directions. Let dry.

Using needle with large eye, string beads on ribbon to desired length and tie

with a pretty bow.

Candy Hearts

Ingredients:

6 oz. semi sweet chocolate

½ cup heavy cream

1 lb. Bag powdered sugar

6 oz. bag white chocolate chips

Colored granular sugars (pink is good)

Cookie sheet, waxed paper, small heart cookie cutter

Directions:

In double boiler or medium size microwave safe bowl combine chocolate and

heavy cream. Heat slowly on stove or in microwave (stirring every so often)

until chocolate is melted and cream and chocolate are fully combined. Don't

overheat.

Remove from stove. Pour into large bowl. Add powdered sugar, a little at a

time, and stir until completely combined. Mixture will be a little stiff.

Line cookie sheet with waxed paper. Put mixture on top spreading out as much

as possible. Put another layer of waxed paper on top. Using your hands or a

rolling pin, spread mixture out evenly to just slightly less depth than the

thickness of your cookie cutter.

Chill completely several hours or overnight.

Using small heart shaped cookie cutter cut heart shapes out of the chilled

chocolate mixture. Try to keep cutouts as close together to save time and

effort. Chill cutouts completely.

In double boiler or microwave slowly melt white chocolate until just melted.

Carefully dip tops of chocolate cutout hearts; twisting hand a little as you

invert them again to cause a little decorative swirl on top. Set to side.

When all hearts have been dipped in chocolate and the white chocolate is

completely dry, then dip edges in colored sugar.

Chill candies. They are best when served cold.

***********************************************************************

Web Of Love

Take a ball of red or pink yarn and have the children sit in a circle. Give

the ball to one child and loosely tie the end of the yarn around his/her

wrist. The child begins by saying, "I love _____ because he/she _______"

(suggestions: shares her crayons with me, always plays with me, helps me clean

up, etc.). The speaker tosses the ball of yarn to the child he/she named and

that child takes a turn, etc., etc., until all children have had a turn to

toss the yarn. Loop the yarn around each child's wrist as they take their

turn. We were not supposed to say someone's name that already was tangled in

the web until EVERYONE had had a turn, then we kept going until the yarn ran

out.

***********************************************************************

Math Hearts

Cut several heart shapes in half. On one side write 4 + 1 =, on the other

side, the answer. Do this using different math problems.

***********************************************************************

Heart Sorting

Cut various hearts from pink, red, and white construction paper. The children

can sort the hearts by color or by size.

***********************************************************************

Heart Rhymes

Cut out enough hearts for each child in your class. Glue a magazine picture

on each heart. Place all the hearts in a large paper sack. Have each child

take a turn to choose a heart from the bag. Let each child name words that

rhyme with the picture on their heart.

***********************************************************************

Valentine Land Game

Can be played to music. It goes like this:

Pass the heart around

Pass the heart around

Pass the heart along

Pass the heart around

Pass the heart around

As we sing this song

It is Valentine's

It is Valentine's

It is Valentine's Day

It is Valentine's

It is Valentine's

And we pass the heart this way

When the music stops

When the music stops

And the heart is in your hand

When the music stops

When the music stops

Enter Valentine Land

Repeat three verses two more times, faster each time. You can pass the heart

behind your back, over your head, or under your legs. Ask the children for

other passing ideas.

***********************************************************************

Heart Matching Game

Cut a large heart out of red poster board. Divide the heart cut out into 9

sections (like a tic-tac-toe game). Cut 9 hearts, each out of different

colors of construction paper. Glue 9 of the hearts into the 9 sections of the

poster board heart. Cover with clear contact paper. Cut out more hearts to

match on the poster board heart. For durability, cover each of the hearts

with clear contact paper. Have the children match the hearts.

***********************************************************************

Valentine Box Toss

Materials:

A big heart shaped box

Play dough hearts the children have made

Directions:

Make your favorite play dough recipe. Have the children use cookie cutters to

make heart shapes out of the play dough. Let the heart shapes dry completely.

Spray the heart shapes with clear lacquer (this strengthens the shapes). Once

the hearts are dry, place the candy box on a carpeted area in your classroom.

Have the children toss the hearts into the candy box.

***********************************************************************

Valentine's Day Door Cards

Put leftover Christmas wrap on the length of your front door. Write a

valentine greeting on top in red, pink, and purple. At the bottom write, "We

love you this many." Put all of the children's handprints on it. Write their

names next to their hands. After Valentine's Day take it down and cut out

each child's set of hands and send them home.

***********************************************************************

Valenpillars

Set out various sizes of hearts cut from red, pink, black, and white

construction paper, including some with the centers cut out. Let the children

glue a number of hearts together in a row, with only the edges touching to

make valenpillar bodies. Then let them glue on eyes and feelers from black

construction paper.

**********************************************************************

Valentine Projects

1) We have a couple of birthdays coming up in February, so we're making our

own gift wrap paper. We've got heart shaped cookie cutters that we're

tracing, very carefully, onto white butcher paper. Then, we've been

coloring them all different colors. On another sheet, we've been stamping,

with different colored stamping pads, hearts, arrows, flowers etc., and

we've also been adding scribbles in colored pencil.

2) We're making Valentine bookmarks for part of the birthday gifts, as we

are giving books as the main gift. Our smallest heart shaped cookie cutter

has been traced on a lot of different light-weight colored construction

sheets and we're cutting them out, very carefully. Then, on a bright red

rectangular (about 5" long) piece of heavy construction paper, we're gluing

them overlapping the pointed end. Each bookmark will have 5 to 6 hearts on

it. We started gluing from the top, so that the heart shape is seen on all

of them, but the pointed end is only seen on the bottom one.

3) We're also doing more heart shapes on light-weight construction paper,

and putting our names on them all. We'll hang them in modules of all the

daycare kids, all over the house. This will make us feel very special!

Each child can then take home one module on Valentine's Day, as their

special gift from everyone else at daycare.

CANDY HEARTS

construction paper

clear contact paper

heavy clear plastic

scissors

yarn

single hole paper punch

assorted candies

1--make a heart shaped paper pattern from a 6-inch square of paper. Cut it out. Trace around this shape onto construction paper. Cut a 6-inch square of clear contact paper and stick it onto the construction paper. Cut out the heart shape. Cut out a heart from the clear plastic.

2--Put both the clear vinyl heart and the paper heart together with the clear heart on top. Using a single-hole paper punch. make holes around the edges of the heart pieces. Try to keep the holes evenly spaced and the same distance from the edges. Hold the hearts tightly together to keep them from sliding.

3--to assemble the heart pieces, place the vinyl heart on top of the covered paper hart, making sure the holes line up. Cut a 36-inch piece of yarn. Let the children begin "sewing" the pieces together by pulling the yarn through the hole at the top of the heart. Leave about 8 inches loose to tie the bow. Pull it through the next hole to make a stitch. Continue around the edge until you've gone past the bottom point of the heart.

4--Fill the heart with candy. Then, continue stitching the pieces together until you reach the top. With the end of yarn you left free at the beginning, tie a bow to keep the heart closed. Too much candy will make the heart curl up and look lumpy. Undo a few stitches and take out some candy if this happens.
